In 1949 Standard Grocery Store To Open & Hiring Help (located 10th Washington Street) Comment: This is the first grocery store to open in Columbus. Before this it was all Mom & Pop stores. The A&P also opened at 7th & Washington Street. Click on picture to enlarge Customers Coming Form Standard Grocery Store (Washington Street Columbus) Click on picture to enlarge

City Power House Near White River (between 1st & 2nd Streets) Year 1949Comment: This was the 2nd Street bridge at the time. This pictures were probably taken in the last few days of December 1949 by the photographer below. It is next to the river and closed many years ago and then later was refurbished into a Senior Citizen Center. The Tipton Mount Home was to the far left of the plant Click Pictures To Enlarge

Westermeier Hardware Store & Schaefer Mill 1015 3rd Street & 1014 3rd Street ( Mill was corner of California & 3rd) Columbus, Indiana Comment: Westermeier store sold a vast amount of products. This included toys shown in the windows, old wringer type clothes washers, stoves, water heaters, kitchen appliances, tools, nuts/bolts, screws and refrigerators. In the background through the window is Schaefer Mill across 3rd Street. I remember the store in the 1940s, 1950s and sometime in 1960s. The store is long gone but memories still float in our minds. The Schaefer Flour Mill received farmer's grain for processing, storage and shipment by trucks and rail. The railroad track ran across 3rd Street to the downtown connections and back behind Cummins Engine Company. I remember this mill from the 1948 time period until the 1960s. Click picture to enlarge

St. Denis Hotel Inside Looking Out At Washington and 5th StreetEither a late 1949 or early 1950 photo Columbus, Indiana Rost & Son Jewelry on corner across street. Down 5th on left not shown was the Rio theater. The gentleman pictured looks like an executive with silk socks and expensive clothing and shoes. What a fantastic picture from inside the St. Denis Hotel of the past. Click on picture to enlarge
