Altho' daughter Paige seemed to be the 'official photographer' for our jaunt to Columbus, April 2007, I did manage a couple of photos 'on my list to take.' To round out the story about Tommy Warner as Santa, we journeyed to the City Hall and took this photo, as described in other posts in this thread. Enjoy. Nanc

It's that time again and on Nov 6th Santa(george) and myself leave for st louis. We really enjoy this time of year but don't ever get the idea of staying in a hotel very long would be fun. Forget it I would enjoy being home so much more at this time of year but there would be a lot of disappointed boys and girls as George is the only Santa they know as this is year ten. Sorry I won't make it to the meeting but Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas to all of you and your families.
Will miss all of you Margie

Margo, I would suggest you call city hall and ask. I'll bet they would have no problem whatsoever putting you in touch with whomever and then you would know for sure. I can't see why anyone would object to you taking a picture of the painting. I have a friend who is an artist in Florida and someone is always taking pictures of her work which is hung in city hall there.

About Santa's Rocket Ship: Surprisingly, this has been bouncing around my head for awhile. I remember taking a ride on this once or twice back in the 70's, over by Danners. I thought the "Ship" was black but all pictures that I have found show it orangeish-red. I found a website that had a picture of one rusting away in a field. Is my memory right? I would have been well under 10 years old when I took the ride. The site is: tpqonline.org/buck.html

hi, My name is Ray Brown, In the 70's I played Santa around Columbus. I was Santa at the Commons, and Doc Kuntz was my phoographer, he had a photo shop in Nashville where I lived and still live. He sold pics to people who wanted them. It was a lots of fun, i still have my Santa Suit that my wife Linda made for me. Ray (Butch) Brown

I am looking for information on a strange house that I use to go play at when I was a little girl in the 1970’s I believe this house was on Cherry (I mean Elm) Street. In the 2400-2200 block, on the left side as you turn off 25th street. This house had cinderblocks all around it. (not around the house but around the “yard/land) and I remember thinking that it looked like a Santa house, (junk yard) with a bunch of old time Christmas items and santa stuff all around.
I haven’t been to Columbus in many years, but I was thinking back about this house and how strange it was. The house seemed like the yard was all junk then and unused. I was wondering if you knew maybe back in the 40s to the 50s if this wasn’t used for a santa place for kids to go. I believe this was cherry street because I lived on Gilmore Street and I had to walk through the alley of Maple and then across the street to another one, and walk down. So I had to walk through a couple of alleys and down the street on Elm.
This house that I would go visit my friends at was a two story house and everything (liked drawers and dressers) was built in. I played upstairs and it seemed that the upstairs was huge! I can’t even remember who lived there in the 1970’s I was just wondering if you could check it out. (See if you can find something about a santa’s workshop in cols in the 1940’s to the 50’s or 60’s. Or something to do with Christmas in that time. Maybe there were pictures of this place, or maybe it was privately owned by someone and he did something for the kids that they came to visit at Christmas time. But something had to do with Christmas at that time. Maybe the old man (or woman, couple etc) died and it was left behind.

Re: A History Of Santa's In Columbus! SANTA's ROCKET SHIP Santa’s Rocket Ship was one of five custom buses made with a Christmas theme. They were built by Lloyd Laster of Tyler, TX, who used them as advertising venues: The vehicles traveled all over the southern and southwest parts of the country taking Holiday Shoppers on joy rides while making appearances at shopping centers and malls. Each of the Santa’s Rocket Ships traveled with a crew of five; a driver, two attendants, a hostess, and of course Santa Claus. Laster started in the 1950s with one Santa’s Rocket Ship and had gradually built up the fleet of five Christmas vehicles by the time he retired in 1974. Laster sold the business to another man Bill Griffith who lived in Wisconsin. Griffith operated the vehicles throughout the Midwest for several more years before the cost of maintaining and fueling 5 who continued to use the vehicles for several years before it ceased to be a profitable activity Now You can find 1 from my understanding at MUKLUK LAND in Alaska Photos at www.muklukland.net/pics/source/img_1818.htmljalopnik.com/5717297/a-brief-history-of-santas-rocket-ship

Re: A History Of Santa's In Columbus!
Santa's Shanty was located in 25th Street Shopping Center. The little square red & white building sat facing 25th st. A large real Christmas tree standing to the west of the shanty. The Shanty hosted Santa and Mrs Claus Fridays 6-8p , Saturdays 9a-11a and 2p-4p.They passed out loli pop/tootsie roll pops. Dale Thompson was Santa, and Deniece Norman assisted Santa. Tom Warner filled in a few times as well from my understanding.. We can thank the Stams and the folks at the old Camera Shop.

I have been a professional Santa for over 30 years I myself have participated in some of the events and business in various states,Columbus area, and around the state. Even appeared in Santa Claus Indiana for a summer for the grand reopening for Santa's Candy Castle. I have been offered positions across the world, but I enjoy Christmas Time here in Indiana. Maybe someday they will coinvince me to be overseas for the holidays. You never know where I will be asked to appear next. You may view my site, read my bio and view some of my photos there. www.indianasanta.comI hope everyone has a GREAT 2011
