Thanks, Ricky, for posting this. I have sent it on to all of my family contacts who have such wonderful memories of the Gardens. Sorry to say, I was not ever able to go inside the house. Question: After reading the listing, and seeing 3 CAR GARAGE included, I had to satisfy my curiosity.... In all of my years as a child playing in the garden, I never did recall anything about a 3 car garage. I began to wonder where it was located, and how the cars drove into it? After circling the block 3 times, I finally discovered the garage next to the Old Greenhouse. However, I could not determine any street or road to access it? Can someone satisfy my curiosity

Seems strange they don't mention the gardner's home, or the greenhouses, as part of the listing. Did I miss something?? I would also think they could get a little closer on property size than "3 to 5 acres".

The description is a little underwhelming if you know the property. It mentions the garages but not the gardeners "shack" or the greenhouses. It just says "outbuildings". Not any mention of the historical significance of the property. Surprisingly affordable (to some): Calculate Your Payments Home Price: $1.500,000 Down Payment: $300,000 / 20 % Loan Term: 360 months / 30 years Annual Interest Rate: 6.46% Monthly Payment: $7553 Seems strange they don't mention the gardner's home, or the greenhouses, as part of the listing. Did I miss something?? I would also think they could get a little closer on property size than "3 to 5 acres".

If my memory serves me correctly there was a garage just to the east of the Gardner's home, a three car garage that faced 6th St., it has been gone for several years. The garage is shown on the 1927 Sanborn maps. I believe the story goes that Clessie Cummins started experimenting with the Diesel in a garage at that location while working for the Irwin family as a chauffeur.

Those old garages are gone. There is a garage currently by the driveway between the Gardens and the greenhouse area. I have no idea when that was built: it has a similar brick but appears much newer than the rest of the property. You can see it from the side driveway near the back of Lincoln School. This is a link to the website marketing the Irwin House and Gardens. Amazing details and pictures in this one. It's a real bargain, we should buy it for our clubhouse! - www.irwinhomeandgarden.com/

The Miller/Sweeney Family had a Scot gardener at the Irwin House and Gardens. Both the gardener and his wife had a daughter who was crippled by an unknown, to me, ailment. She couldn't leave the Big House so she went to CHS via telephone. I believe she attended the 1956 graduation but am not positive. She was a very nice person. I met her and her family several times.

Sara, it was sold and turned in to a bed and breakfast type place. Can't remember who bought it tho. Maybe someone else knows.

It is owned by local people (Chris and Jessica Stevens) and managed by Jessica's parents (Jim and Eve Jackson). Here is their new website: www.irwingardens.com/

We stayed in the Irwin house for our anniversary. What a treat to be sitting and sleeping in such a historic part of our local history. We stayed in the 3rd floor suite (W.G. Irwin's bachelor pad!). We were the only guests that night so we got to roam practically every inch of the house. In the morning had a delightful brunch in the family dining room.
