The name of this year's celebration will be Columbus: 159 Years
When: Friday & Saturday, September 13th and 14th, from 10 am to 4 pm each day
Where: Cleo Rogers Memorial Library, downtown Columbus

If you would like to attend our next meeting, it will be held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, May 21st, in Conference Room 3, downstairs in the Library.
We hope to have a great turnout this year, so be sure to mark it on your calendar!

With our Theme this year being Columbus: 159 Years, I will be posting some highlights of dates that Jim Loesch may want to use.
Instead of posting them in the Columbus Indiana Broken Down By Decade folder, I will only post them here. It will help us all keep track of them in one handy location!
So, with that, here are a couple:
(For Jim Loesch)
—November 6, 1869: the city was lighted with gas for the first time.
—April 3, 1875: The new clock in the courthouse tower was first started on time at 5:45 pm on Saturday, April 3, 1875, and at 7 o'clock, gas was turned on by the machinery, brilliantly illuminating the four dials, which made them at a distance look like full moons swinging in the heavens.. It was a grand sight, and Washington and Tipton (3rd) Streets were crowded with men, women and children to witness the first turning on of the gas, and expressions of delight were heard on every side.
—December 10, 1879: General Ulysses S. Grant makes a brief stop in Columbus and speaks to the crowd from the back of his train car. Many businesses were closed during the time in order to offer everyone a chance to hear him speak.
—December 15, 1941: The first World War II casualty from Bartholomew County was Paul Scheidt.
—January 6, 1873: Frederick Douglass gave a lecture at Crump's Opera House
Jim, these are only suggestions. Items of interest I've noted while going through the Republican newspaper in search of information for my book.
