Hi Margo, This has nothing to do with your 55 class, but we were neighbors in the 40's, I lived 3 houses from Cummins, you lived on the other side on the "West" family. five houses from Cummins. I remember there were several children, I thought all girls and you all were very active kids. Glad to have you aboard the website, Bob Lane, class 52

And a big hello to you too, Bob.
I thought that name sounded familiar! Your home was located closer to Jerry and Bob Records weren't you? I have 3 sisters, Sheila, Leanna, and Linda. Yes, we were a very active famliy. I probably spent many hours skating past your home on the way to the Cummins fence, and then back! I am on my way in a little while to our Reunion planning committee meeting. Surely doesn't seem like 50 yrs have gone by ! Will see Jon Guckenberger, Stan Owen, possibly Steve Schwaniger . Must close for now but will chat more later.. Blessings, Margo

The Records' family lived at corner of 502 Union across from the Cummins main office, which is now a parking lot. Directly, next door to us on Union Street lived Gladys and Gus Welmer which were the parents of Bob "Bird" Welmer. NCAA referee Steve Welmer was there grandson. They were such nice, wonderful sweet people. Back in those days many of the kids bounced balls off the Cummins Engine Company walls, and built four wheeled race cars that gravity zoomed down the hill going into a Cummins storage dump. Jerry and I built numerous races cars controlled by our feet or ropes to the front axle. The wheels were found from old red rider wagons thrown away and the axles too. I remember walking to the first and second grade down 5th street to the Lincoln School behind the ole "Jive Kennel." Back in those days kids didn't have to worry as much today about criminals and abductors etc. As a treat once in a great while I would go to the Rio or Mode Theaters for a movie with brother Jerry. My first grade teacher was a "peach" and her name was Mrs. Book. I remember in the far left corner of her classroom she always displayed a giant bee hive attached to a tree limb. Living on the corner of 5th and Union was a grand time in the 40s even if we didn't have all the luxuries of life at that time. In those days the ice was delivered to the door for our ice boxes and kids played all day outside. The radio was the main source of evening pleasure with the Ted Mack hour and the other programs. No in those days there wasn't television and we didn't have a telephone. People sat on their porches talked to the walking-by neighbors and the windows stayed open in the summer. In our yard was a large pear tree that flourished with pears each summer and kept my bare feet full of bee stings. I could walk across the street at times and talk to the Cummins workers that were behind a messed metal seperator entrance and at times talk to my dad. My family moved from the 502 Union in 1950 to a new home on 15th Street, but brother Jerry and I took our race cars but didn't have the pleasure of hills to continue the down hill fun, so we started building bikes. I think we both painted our stripped bikes at least every two weeks of a different color. I can truthfully say I have ridden my bike and walked ever street in Columbus in the 50s. Grand memories they are and I thank my parents for raising my brother and I they way we are today. Many of those people of 5th Street such as the West's and Welmers are memories that one always thinks of as pleasant. Brother Jerry now lives in Florida and I live in South Carolina, both retired now. Bob Records

Dear Jerry and Bob, Thanks so much for your reply and the wonderful memories you have stirred up. I really thought so much of the West Family and their grandson ,Billy. It really hurt me when Mr. West passed away on Christmas eve and they had not opened their presents. She was so unhappy they had not opened them the night before, so he could enjoy them also. Yes, I remember Miss Book. I had forggoten about the bee hive until you mentioned it. She always smacked my left hand each day with a ruler, as I refused to write with my right hand. Still do to this day! Do you remember the little green cards with black letters we used to learn the alphabet? Wish I had a set now ! I also remember her reading a chapter each day from a book about a little boy and his elephant, but can't remember the title. Would love to know, so that I could find the book and read it again. Do you remember which teacher had a wigwam set up in her classroom ? I loved that so much ! I can almost picture her, but can't remember her name. Sorry I could not be there when they had the Ann. at the Gym this past year. I did enjoy reading your article in the paper, Bob. Brought back a lot of fond memories! I was out of town visiting my daughter that weekend. I have a lot of fond memories of your mother, Kate. She was a special lady, just like my MOM. Nellie had to work at the Hospital,to help support us 4 girls, and especially to buy shoes! We wore them out with all the walking we did! My dad, Rex, worked at W.W. Mooney and Sons Tannery down close to "Death Valley". Sue Stonecipher and Ron Whitehorn told me they were disappointed in the crowd turnout that night. H.S. Basketball in Columbus has really changed since we used to fill the "Cracker Barrell". Too many other sports and activities for the H.S. crowd now. Must close for now, but so good to stir up memories with my good neighbors on 5th street. It was a kinder, gentler era then and there are times I wish we could go back if just for one day! Will be looking for your replies, while we plan our Class Reunion. Jon Guckenberger is heading it again, with Stanley Owen, Janet Sewell, Darlene Ackenback, Judy Poffenger and a bunch of others. If you would be interested in coming to our Activities, just let me know. Blessings, Margo McCalip Hughey

Dear Margo:
I remember all those girls and your family. My memory is not as great because I was younger than brother Jerry by four years. I graduated from Columbus High School in 1960. Jerry was just talking to me on the phone as I was reading your reply. I remember now that my first grade teacher was Miss Hooten not Miss Book. Now, after thinking about it Miss Hooten was my first grade teacher and Miss Book my second grade at Lincoln grade school. I think maybe Miss Hooten had the Wigwam in her classroom. I do remember the black and green backgrounded letters after you said that, and I too remember Miss Hooten would slap my hands with a ruler once because I was talking to someone. I recall that one year I picked some of the ladies flowers in her backyard (she lived on the corner opposite side of 5th at intersection) to give to my mother. I was too young to realize that I shouldn't be doing that at the time. I took them home and gave them to my mother and she said: "Bobby where did you get these wonderful flowers?" I told her and then I got in hot water for that, but learned not to be picking peoples flowers. Talking about Mrs West well she gave my mother a very nice cup and saucer when we lived on Union. Mother kept it and one year when I was maybe in the 8 grade or so, she was washing both and she dropped it on the floor and broke the cup. Well, mom cried and cried and took flour and water and glued it back together and kept it. Well, since my mother's death of 1975 I have that cup and saucer displayed in our formal living room as memories of mom and Mrs West. My wife just called it is super time will run, but will return again. Nice, talking to you and Jerry will write later he said. Bob Records

HI MARGO, THANKS FOR REPLY. MOST OF MY HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS WERE IN CLASS OF 55. I DATED SALLY THOMPSON AND SPORTS WITH 55 GUYS. MOST OF YOUR CLASSMATES ARE FRIENDS. MY REGARDS TO JOHN AND THE OTHERS YOU MENTIONED. I DIDN'T MAKE IT BACK TO THE 50TH REUNION, NOR DID JERRY SCHOFIELD. SCHO LIVES NEAR SARASOTA AND WE TALK DAILY BY E-MAIL. NOT ENOUGH NOTICE AND I HAVE HAD SOME HEALTH PROBLEMS WITH HIPS AND LEGS. SPORTS FINALLY TOOK THEIR TOLL.
I HAD MS. BOOK AS WELL, OF COURSE. SAW BOTH SHE AND MS. HOOTEN/WOOTEN AT A FEW VARSITY BALLGAMES WHEN I PLAYED. THEY WOULD STAND AT A TUNNEL ENTRANCE AND WATCH. I SPOKE TO THEM AND THEY REMEMBERED ME. I THINK I RECALL MS BOOK SLAPPING MY HANDS TOO. PROBABLY FOR A DIFFERENT REASON. MISCHIEF.
I BELIEVE JANET SEWELL HAS A FEW RECORDS' GENES, AS I THINK SHE DESCENDS FROM TUNIS AND SUSANNAH (RECORDS) QUICK WHO WERE MARRIED ABOUT 1826 . SUSANNAH WAS THE SISTER TO MY GR GR GRANDFATHER WILLIAM PARKER RECORDS WHO LIVED IN MOUNT AUBURN/BLACKHAWK AND WAS A TANNER AT ONE TIME AS WELL AS A FARMER. THE RECORDS FAMILY GOT TO BARTHOLOMEW CO AREA IN 1821. ASK HER FOR ME IF YOU WOULD. I HAVE DONE EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON OUR FAMILY. ALSO, DID YOUR HUSBANDS FAMILY, HUGHEY, COME FROM THE OLD TOWN WASHINGTON, KENTUCKY, TIMEFRAME 1786 -1800. A JOHN HUGHEY HUNTED BUFFALO WITH MY GR GR GR GRANDFATHER CAPTAIN SPENCER RECORDS. THEY KNEW DANIEL BOONE. I HAVE A BOOK BY HIM THAT MENTIONS JOHN HUGHEY. THE HUGHEYS' MAY HAVE BEEN FIRST SETTLERS IN BARTHOLOMEW LIKE THE RECORDS'.
I HAD FORGOTTEN THE CHRISTMAS EVE DEATH OF MR. WEST. BILLY WAS A GOOD PERSON.
I REMEMBER YOUR MOTHER, A VERY KIND LADY. HARD WORKING. WE LOST MOM WHEN SHE WAS 55, A STROKE. BOB AND I HAVE TO GUARD HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.
NO, COLUMBUS IS NOT THE SAME. I LIKE THE SIMPLE WAYS OF LIFE. I'M VERY LAIDBACK AND TRY NOT TO RUFFLE TOO MANY FEATHERS. I LIVE NEAR EGLIN AFB THE BIGGEST AND BEST BASE IN THE WORLD. I SERVED THERE AS BASE COMMANDER FOR TWO YEARS AND RETIRED, COMPLETING 26. NAVARRE IS A COUNTRY TOWN WITH A LOT OF "REDNECKS." I'M 5 MILES FROM THE BEACH AND GULF AS A CROW FLIES. WE HAVE PURE WHITE SAND BEACHES.
MY E-MAIL IS JREC973426@AOL.COM.

;D Hi Margo: Your sis, Sheila here. Congratulations on creating such a wonderful board for your class re-union. Job well done.
I have been reading the Records account of the "good ole'days" and sure brought back some old memories. They may be old but they are precious.
I remember the Records and the Lanes and the Wests. If I recall correctly it was one of the Record boys that spotted Linda walking her way to Washington street one summer day. Our brother Jim had to take off running to catch her. So thank you, Bob or Jerry, whichever one you were who were so observant.
Wasn't the West boy involved with a band? I seem to recall he had one and had been practicing in the West's living room. Some of us had stopped to listen and I was allowed to sing a song with them. Wow, was I proud!! Always wondered if they continued on.
There were also on our side of the street, a house close to the end of the block that had two great danes. We would walk down the alley and they would try to jump the fence after us. Any of you remember who owned them?
The hill on California to third was a great bike-riding hill. I remember coming down that hill at break-neck speed. I was always a sort of tomboy growing up, so going at a fast speed was thrilling to me. I wrecked the bike and I do not remember how long it took for Dad to fix it.
We girls used to walk down to the tannery and take Dad his lunch. Oh my, the smell of the leather and the acid was a very exhilerating experience. We loved the walks and especially our time with Dad.
And yes, we walked the streets to school. Rain, snow, sleet or hail. The postman had nothing on us. Mom would dress me in those horrid wool pants to keep my legs warm and the snow would make them wet, and the smell.......oh my word....the smell when wool is wet!!
I have nine children, 6 boys and 3 girls. I have one son who retired Marine and another retired navy. Two more served 4 years in the Marine Corps. My youngest son just returned from Iraq serving with the 101st Airborne around Mosul and Baghdad. He was in Camp Pennsylvania when it was bombed. I thank and praise the Lord that He brought him home safely. He lives in Columbus, close to Margo, and is now serving as a recruiter for the Army National Guard.
My three daughters are doing well. One is in California, one here in Georgetown, whom I live with and one in Rockville. My oldest is a financial advisor and my youngest daughter is an RN at Kosair's Children's Hospital. They have all given me wonderful grandchildren (30) and great-grandchildren. (27) No..am not looking for the great-great-grandchild yet. But it is possible in the next few years!!
Was wonderful talking with you all and again, a very nice board Margo...thanks to Mr. Sechrest for setting it up for you. A very nice gentleman.
Love you sis: Sheila

THIS MAY BE MY LAST NOTE, AS I DON'T WANT TO ABUSE THE PURPOSE OF YOUR SPECIAL SITE FOR THE CLASS REUNION. MY E-MAIL IS JREC973426@AOL.COM.
IT IS GOOD TO HEAR FROM SHELIA. WHAT A FAMILY. I'M ENVIOUS OF SO MANY CHILDREN AND GRAND AND GREAT GRANDS. CONGRATS ON SO MANY SERVING IN THE ARMED FORCES. A GREAT WAY OF LIFE. I'M ESPECIALL GLAD TO HEAR YOUR SON MADE IT HOME SAFELY FROM BAGHDAD. THANK HIM FOR HIS SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY.
I REMEMBER SHELIA AS THE TALLER, OLDER SISTER AND ONE THAT HELPED YOUR MOTHER WHILE SHE WORKED. SHE WAS ALWAYS BUSY.
I HAVE A PICTURE OF MYSELF AT ABOUT AGE 5 SITTING IN A WAGON WITH A LITTLE GIRL ABOUT MY AGE. IT MAY HAVE BEEN MARGO. WE WERE BOTH SOMEWHAT DIRTY FROM THE SOOT AND PLAYING. IT WAS IN TTHE WAR YEARS AS I HAD ON A SAILORS CAP, GIVEN TO ME BY MY UNCLE. I WILL SEND IF YOU CAN GIVE ME AN E-MAIL ADDRESS.
IT WAS LONG TIME AGO, OVER 60 YEARS. GAD. GLAD EVERYONE IS STILL KICKING.
I MAY HAVE BEEN THE ONE THAT SAW YOUR LITTLE SISTER HEADED FOR DOWNTOWN.
WE MOVED FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD IN ABOUT 1950 AS CUMMINS WANTED TO TEAR DOWN THOSE HOUSES ON UNION. THINK DAD RENTED FOR ABOUT 15 DOLLARS PER MONTH. DAD USUALLY WORKED 7 DAYS A WEEK.
REMEMBER THE LITTLE STORE ACROSS FROM LUTHERAN SCHOOL/CHURCH. WOW, COOKIES IN JARS AND CANDY TOO. TWO PIECES FOR A PENNY. JUST PAST NOLTINGS. I HEARD THAT BUTCH PASSED AWAY. SAD.
OH, WE PLAYED BASEBALL BEHIND WESTERMEIRS. LARRY ABLE AND OTHERS.
GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU ALL.

Hi to all, and I, for one, love all the memories you have posted. And do keep writing, please, if not here, on one of the other boards. Our memories are truly priceless. And Sheila, when you mentioned: And yes, we walked the streets to school. Rain, snow, sleet or hail. The postman had nothing on us. Mom would dress me in those horrid wool pants to keep my legs warm and the snow would make them wet, and the smell.......oh my word....the smell when wool is wet!!
I had to wonder if you or Margo were one of the ones that joined Donna Hollenbeck and me in the Wilson study hall the day we walked to school in really deep snow, only to discover that none of the country kids or local bus kids came to school that day!!! ;D Think it was Miss Lepert (sp) who ran herd on the small group of kids attending that day. She played math games with us, giving a "running problem" that we had to solve in our heads. Bless that lady, she haunted me throughout my teaching career. I volunteered the answer to one problem that day with the answer: Nothing!!!! Oops, I was wrong. The answer was: Zero, and I was politely and firmly corrected in my thinking. ;D Have used that game as a sponge activitiy for years and years in the classroom-----and ALWAYS have made the point with hundreds of kids over the years, IT IS ZERO, not nothing!!!!!!!!! Thank you, Miss Lepert, you definitely touched the future. And yes, Sheila, those leggings were horrid and I hated wearing them, too. And galoshes-----as well, and for the boys, theirs had those big clips on them to keep them closed. Red rubber boots must have been more expensive, or in short supply in my size, I yearned to have red ones, and black, was all I ever had. Maybe a pair of white ones much later on. Have often wondered just how much recess time we actually had, or how long the recess was-----it took a long time to "dress" for the weather and get outside to play what with all the gear we wore to keep warm and dry. And white bucks, and the absolute "must have," a bunny bag to keep them clean! And those were hard to get, as I got my bucks in Indianapolis. And while on shoes, I always had to clean and polish my leather shoes once a week. And no amount of spit and polish made those brown oxfords something I liked! And they had to last, you know! And those little metal "things" on the wear areas to make them last even longer!!! Love the memories. Nanc

Just a flash thought. I hope that everyone is letting their adult kids and old friends know about this site. Our postings are so enlightening for everyone, as well as all the things that David has put together here in the way of history. My girls are native Californians, and really only know of Columbus via my "tales" and those of their grandparents, and a couple of visits there in the past. Yesterday, I had to laugh, as one daughter called me to tell me that "she understood" why I was loving this site so much. She had been reading memories posted, and had looked elsewhere on the site and had some "family" questions she wanted answered as she browsed through the wealth of information. Thanks, David, for making this site so wonderful. It is truly a special place. Surely do appreciate all your efforts. Nanc

Jerry, Thanks so much for your information about activities on 5th St. You keep stirring up memories!! I do remember the little store across from St.Peter's Lutheran School and Church. Mother would let me walk down and buy some groceries and we ran an account there until payday. Can't remember the owner's name ,just knew he wore glasses! Funny, what memories stay in your mind! He was always so kind to all the kids when we came in the store. He knew he could trust us as we would not dream of taking anything! PLEASE keep writing to this site, or pick the General Columbus High School site to add more info.
My email addy is mar_hughey@hotmail.com and would love to see that picture! It surely sounds like me with soot and a dirty face!! Do you remember the old metal swing set we had in our back yard, with a trapeze on it? The small garage where we kept chickens for our meat supply on the North side of our back yard? We also had a small storage shed on the south side, that we could climb to the roof of, and then manage to swing over to the West home ? Billy West used to love to come over that way as it was more fun than just walking! We also had a victory garden during WW II , and continued to have one for many years after that. Do you remember collecting newspapers to take to school, and saving anything aluminum for the same purpose? Will look forward to seeing that pic. I do have one of our Dad and the 4 girls taken on our front porch. Will try to take it in and put it on a disc so that I can send it to you. May I forward your address to Ron & Sue Whitehorn? I know he would love to talk to you. they are living in CA, and will be back for the reunion in August. I talk to them frequently as his MOM is in a Nursing home here, and I go to visit her for them. Must close for now, will answer some more messages. Blessings, Margo

Sheila, I have been exchanging notes with Margo and now we hear from you. We were neighbors on fifth Street in the 40's and I have some great memories of that time. You girls were very busy and as I think on it, other things keep coming back to mind. But what I wanted to say to you is, after reading your bio. I think you and your husband must have been wonderful parents to have raised that great family. I hope you will post some more of your memories. Most of mine are on the 40's thread. My brother, Gary died about 7 years ago, I posted his obit some time back. God love you all. Bob Lane

Dear Sis, Sheila, So glad you found this site and posted some bio on yourself ! Now I just need to get the other 2 sisters started also. In case anyone is wondering I did not match Sheila's record for progeny at all! Bill and I had 4 daughters. When the last one, Kathy, was born Sheila at that time had 8 and I knew I was not even close to catching her!
From the 4 daughters, two have given me my 7 grandchildren and so far 1 great grandchild. My husband, Bill, passed away 4 yrs ago after a lengthy illness, and I have spent a lot of my time since then Volunteering in the Columbus Community. I enjoy playing Euchre at the Senior Center on Tuesday nights, and at Eastside Center on Sat. afternoons.
May I offer my condolences for your loss,Bob? I know Gary must have meant a great deal to you. I have also lost 2 brothers, both Veterans. Bill is buried in Arlington Cemetery and Jim is close by at Daughtery Cemetery. Someday ,I hope to visit Arlington to see my brother's grave and hopefully have some closure then.
BTW Sheila is also a Euchre player. She enjoys online action. As for me, I enjoy the social interaction with friends across the table. Must close for now, more later...Margo
