Must-see Columbus Indiana town boasts world-class architecture By Susan Reigler
Virtually the entire town of Columbus, Ind., is an architectural showplace. Vintage buildings from the 19th century have been beautifully restored. And the collection of innovative modern buildings stands as a testimony to how important your college roommate may turn out to be.
Columbus is the home of Cummins Engine, owned and operated by the Miller family. It grew into an international corporation under the leadership of J. Irwin Miller. But in the middle of the last century, before he became a captain of industry, Miller was an undergraduate at Yale. He roomed with Eero Saarinen, who went on to become one of the country's leading architects.
Obviously, Saarinen's expertise was not lost on Miller, who in the 1950s created the Cummins Engine Foundation, which has paid the fees of distinguished architects to design more than 50 local buildings. As a result, this small city of 33,000 in east-central Indiana has schools, a library, malls, churches and other structures designed by the likes of I.M. Pei, Cesar Pelli, the firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and, naturally, Saarinen.
A survey by the American Institute of Architects lists Columbus as sixth in the United States for architectural quality and innovation. The other five are considerably larger cities -- Chicago, New York, Washington, San Francisco and Boston.
What Columbus also has in common with those cities is that it's a fun place to take a walk.
Your first stop should be the Columbus Area Visitors Center, 506 Fifth St. It's an attraction in itself, a two-story, red-brick, Italianate house featuring two works by contemporary glass artist Dale Chihuly -- Yellow Neon Chandelier and Persian Window. Tours are offered from the center, but if you don't want to go with a group, there are maps for self-guided tours. Do stay for the 15-minute video. It gives an excellent overview of the design history.
At the center of downtown, at Fourth and Washington, is The Commons, a two-story mall designed by Pelli. It has a play area for children, a movie theater and the Columbus Museum of Art & Design. A short walk away, at 329 Washington St., is the perfect place to have lunch in Columbus, Zaharako's.
Just when you've adjusted to the city's modern sensibilities, here's a trip back in time. Zaharako's is an old-fashioned soda fountain, complete with marble, glass and an antique mechanical organ made in Germany in the 19th century. Eating a pressed, toasted sandwich and drinking a thick, creamy malted milkshake is a great way to restore calories after the walking tour.
