I'M NOT THE EXPERT ON THE RECENT HISTORY BUT AS OF FEB 1973 THE IRWIN UNION BANK OFFICES WERE AT 6 THE COLUMBUS CENTER BRANCH AND THE TAYLORSVILLE BRANCH WERE OPEN AT THAT TIME IN ADDITION TO THE 4 MENTIONED IN THE AD
AFTER THAT I THINK THERE WAS A NEW BUILDING REPLACING STATE AT MAPLETON AND THEN A BRANCH ADDED IN THE SHOPPING AREA WEST OF TOWN
AFTER THOSE STATE WIDE BRANCHING CAME INTO AFFECT

Jack, I forgot to add last night that when the Irwin Union branch opened in East Columbus, it was on the northeast corner of State and Mapleton (there's a flower shop there today). In fact, the building that housed Jay-C and Hooks Drugs was still rather new when this ad came out. The bank was built on the same property as Jay-C/Hooks, only it sat on the corner
Like you said, at some point in time, Garrison's Market, or what we called the Fruit Market, was demolished and Irwin Union built an office there.
I seem to remember a flower shop occupying the old Irwin Union after they moved across the street. Flowers By Groom, or something like that.
I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that, one day, a picture of the Fruit Market will be found...
Richard may have found out and posted this info before, but I think that this "complex" (Jay-C/Hooks/Irwin Union) had just been built

Some may remember the Storm Sash Company. They were located across the street from Eastbrook Plaza at 2515 25th Street. I definitely recognize Kool Vent Awnings, as they sponsored the Kool Vent Mystery Hour, a television program that came on WFBM or WTTV in the early 1950's. I'm not positive about this, but didn't they move to the old Jay-C location at the corner of State and Center later on? (Where Yellowbrick Road is today).

Gene's Bakery had two locations. Downtown at 525 Washington St., and on the "north" side of town at 1762 25th Street.

Zaharako's at 329 Washington Street. In 1962, while they still made their own ice cream, they no longer made their own candies and became a Whitmans/Mrs. Voogt's candy seller. Cummins Bookstore sold Russell Stover candies.

And how times change . . . you won't find too many ads like this in today's Yellowpages. 1424 Lafayette must have very close to that spur line that cut across the city back in the 1960's.

Bob, I had a good friend who worked at Benzol Cleaners when we were in high school and my family normally took our cleaning to them or else to Art's Cleaners. Think Art's is still around if I am not mistaken and located at the corner of 3rd and California Streets.

Babs: As far as I can tell Art's Cleaners is the oldest (still in business) cleaners in Columbus. I remember mostly the facility on 3rd & California Streets. However, there is an Art's extension facility at North National Road. I recall Art's during the 1950s and forward. At some point they were in the white building that joins the limestone face of today.

I just found out this year that my original relative to come to America in 1738 Valentine Ault was not only the inventor of the pipe organ but also built the original organ in Zaharako's. For as long as I lived and grew up in Columbus I never knew of that fact until this year while researching my family tree.

Tim, can you share any additional info regarding your relative?
Thanks for sharing!

The following appeared in The Republic, Looking Back on July 28, 2010. The information was from this date in 1960.
Bernice Krieg applied for a special-use permit to develop a trampoline court on the south Side of Indiana 7 near Wehmeier Addition in hopes of turning it into a major amusement park.

This is from the Looking Back column in the October 4, 2010 The Republic, the local Columbus, Indiana newspaper. Appearing in 1960. City-type mail delivery was initiated for several Columbus neighborhoods including Riverview Acres, Everroad Park West, the north part of Bethel Village and Eastbrook Plaza Shopping center.

I found this interesting statistic in the Looking Back column from 1960 in today’s The Republic.
As listed by the Columbus license branch, the number of two car families is believed to be the reason for the rise of the record number of cars registered in Bartholomew County. With two months remaining, the total stood at 15,220. The total for all twelve months of 1959 was 14,777.

I received the following email. If anyone can help, could you please contact Kaitlin? Thank you.
Hi, I'm Kaitlin Konieczka. I'm a student at Lake Central High School. Since 1986 the students of Lake Central School in Northwest Indiana have been researching the men and women from the State of Indiana who gave their lives in the Vietnam War. We are the researchers for the World War II, Koren War, and Vietnam War Memorials located in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. Of the 1,621 Vietnam casualties we have located 891 families. We are seeking any and all help in locating Private William Earl Hale's family or his friends. If you have an information that may help please contact me at s0ftbalrulez@yahoo.com, Lake Central High School, Tom Clark, History Department, 8400 Wicker Ave., St.John, Indiana 46373, or email vietnamresearchers@yahoo.com. I would love to hear back from you, if you can find anything at all. Thank you. Sincerly, Kaitlin

The following information is from today’s edition of The Republic.
A 1961 survey by the Columbus Sanitation Department found about half of the garbage bins in ‘bad’ condition. Residents were told to not replace or repair any bins but to use garbage cans instead. The use of garbage cans will eliminate the time and labor of shoveling the garbage out of the bins.
