Update of additional information on the Flossie name. Richard sent me the 1957 directory for 4th Street and in fact it confirms my first post (number 198) that Flossie's Restaurant was located at 432 4th Street (this was the Charley's Restaurant in 1953 directory). The owners name was Flossie A. Stine. I am well aware that she married Ralph Stine in the middle 1950s, but not sure of the date. I further, remember Bill Stott and Flossie telling our family she bought a restaurant on 4th Street. My brother ate their several times he stated.
Assumption: Perhaps Flossie was a Co-owner of other restaurants such as the 25th Street Restaurant and some of Willie's Food Shop Restaurant. I have no idea, but the name Flossie is not that common so it could be the same person. Then again there may have been two Flossie ladies.

Bob, My guess would be that there were 2 Flossies. Stranger things have happened. I know that Flossie and Gus Wille were a married couple. I also remember Bill Stott from our old neighborhood, but I never met his mom. By the way, wasn't the official name of our subdivision, "Elliot Addition?" Perhaps another "project" for Richard to unravel.

This is a sign from the back of Wille's Sandwich shop. Wille is spelled wrong on this sign. It was taken down when they tore the building down; H.L. Ross, Wille's, Myer's Dry Goods, to make way for the new Citizen's Savings and Loan.

Thanks Jim for the Willie's sign. Gregg you could be right about two Flossie's, but that is weird to say the least having two Flossie's within a half block of each other.
On the Elliot Addition I am not sure, maybe my brother remembers. My brother does have emailing to daughter Willie he said today. We will see what comes out.

;D ;D ;D ;D Golly, gee whiz!!!! It was a Sunday afternoon, after having lunch out on the town, and time to take a nap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man alive, should never have done that!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You just 'gotta be quick' to keep up with the message boards and the emails flying through cyber space. I am just amazed at the input on the 'Flossies and the restaurants' in town. Then again, that is what really makes the website and the boards so wonderful. You are all awesome. Nanc

Bob, I believe that the subdivision that you are referring too is the Elliot addition.

Southern Gumshoe Tells Sherlock Holmes and Watson To Re-Light Their Pipes & Adjust Their Magnifying Glass
Definition: Gumshoe requires all your powers of deduction to unravel a host of mysteries
Flossie is back and Willie was not the hand jive of Bo-Diddly. This Gumshoe summary should put a closure on the name Flossie and the restaurants on 4th and 5th Street somewhat.
Source of this information is daughter Shirley Wille Rogers and Jerry Records conversations in the past few hours. Please notice the spelling of "Wille" because in reality the sign said Willie, but daughter Shirley said that wasn't correct, but for ease of the public to spell it and pronounce it the sign said Willie.
FACTS GATHERED BY SOUTHERN GUMSHOE:
- August & Flossie Wille owned and operated the Willie Food Shop Restaurant located at 419 5th Street across the street from the Rio Theater and Polly's Barber Shop.
- August went by the name "Gus".
- Flossie and Gus had two children named Shirley and Naverne.
- Flossie Wille is a separate person from Flossie Stott (later Flossie Stine).
- Shirley Wille Rogers still lives in Columbus. Naverne was one of the fastest track runners in Indiana during the middle 1950s. He is a retired history teacher, track coach, and lives in Morgantown.
- Shirley was aware that Jim Loesch has the Willie sign shown on a post above.
- Gus Wille and Flossie bought all their meats from White Star Meat Market daily. They bought all their eggs from Dean Brougher's parent's farm; which is still operated out near E-town.
- The Wille family and many of the merchants they bought from were members of the Lutheran Church on 5th Street.
- The Willie Food Shop Restaurant was across from the old Columbus City Hall, across the street not far from the Rio Theater.
- Flossie (Stott) Stine opened her Flossie's Restaurant on 4th Street in the early 1950s. The previous name prior to that was called Charley's Restaurant.
- Dean Brougher (eggs folks) was the Class President at Columbus High School in 1954. Dean still lives on the farm and raises Black Angus Cattle.
So, there were two restaurants, two streets with two Flossie names and Willie was really Wille. Now, that is a Bo-Diddly head jive in lieu of the hand jive.

Great job, Bob/Southern Gumshoe, and all the others for 'clearing up this restaurant case.' Also, Bob, terrific military posts recently, as well. Much deserved credit and recognition. Thanks for posting that info. Nanc

Willie's Food Shop Restaurant Building Has More History
I have heard from a source that the restaurant was owned and operated in the 1940s by the Smith Family before the Wille Family.
Most of what has been written here the last couple days is about the 1950s with a touch of the 1940s overlapping and intertwined.

" Skyward Construct Began In 1941 On The First Christian Church "The Church construction in this photo is unique compared to the today's skyward pictures. You can see scaffolds and main steel church frames being erected. The church was finished for public gatherings in 1942. Picture partial 1941 Log Bob

I am trying to locate any information on a Coffee Pot Restaurant that existed during the late 40's. I may have the date wrong but I know it would have been before 1951. My brother Jim Turpin bought this restaurant and then was darfted into the Navy. It was located around 3rd/4th and Brown or Jackson streets. I am not sure if this is even the name but I can remember a large Coffee Pot sign that hung outside the restaurant. When he left my~ my Father and Mother ( Rex and Nellie McCalip )took over management in order to recoup the money they had loaned to him to buy it. I worked many an afternoon and evening washing dishes in the back room. My older sister Sheila waited on tables and that is how she met her future husband David Anderson. He was stationed at Camp Atterbury before he deployed to Germany during the Korean War I think. Anyone

to Margo, I remember this restaurant from the 60's. It was called the B & K. It went by the wayside when they built "red square"(the Mall).

Ice Skating & Sledding Nature's WayLocation was at Ponds @ North 31a or old US 31 near former Columbus Drive Inn Theater. Date was February 1, 1947Notice the old cars approximately 8 vehicles shown and a partial picture of folks skating, and sledding on snow and ice. This was long before Hamilton Cosco built the 25th Street Ice Rink. These were common events and activities during those days. Today, this same area has been filled in and built up and various industrial or business buildings stand on the property. Bob

The following information from 1957 was in the Looking Back column in today’s paper.
The shuttered H. C. Whitmer company in Columbus was ordered by a judge to sell all assets of the bankrupt business.

Take a gander at this photo, and let's put our collective heads together and figure out what 'all the commotion is about.' ;D Observations I can make: -In the background is the corner of 5th/Washington -Hook's Drug Store on NW corner of 5th/Washington -Stott's Restaurant as per prior discussion in this thread -Smith's Jewelry Store on NE corner of 5th/Washington -With that and the cars, am saying this is the late 40s -Crowd in parking lot south of the Rio, City Hall side of 5th -Go from near bottom right corner of photo toward opposite top corner, and it appears that there is a team of at least two spotted ponies that parents and kids are looking at -Note the 'fad' of women wearing scarves 'Have at it!!' That is my best shot for my observations. Enjoy. Nanc
