On July 13th, Babs wrote: "At one time, wasn't this same house on 25th Street used as a B&B?"
Here's what the History of Bartholomew County, Volume II says:
"By the early 1940's, the Caldwell House, then listed at 2117 25th Street, was the Colonial Inn tearoom run by Effie Stofer...there were several different occupants over the next few years. At one time, the property played an important role in the lives of local teenagers. An open dance pavillion with a polished concrete floor and a protective roof was built in the east side yard and was provided with a jukebox and a refreshment concession. In 1953, the elegant building was listed as the Colonial Guest House and included a retail shop."

Thanks David, I knew I had stayed there and it was quite nice. Someone else had also informed me, via Nanc, about it being called The Colonial Inn and I believe she said it was owned by the same lady who owned Yula's Specialty Shop, next door to Brunings on Washington Street. Funny how someone posts an item and then it triggers someone else's memory on it. Have a great day. Babs

It would seem that the Columbus in the 1940’s has just about run itself out, but before we close it out I would add a comment to this post. I posted a poem On June 21, page 6 of the 40’s regarding Margo’s Fifth Street Bunch. . This is my final comment, promise. If I remember correctly, there were about twelve of us kids in the fifth street bunch. I do not remember any of these kids ever getting into any serious trouble. None of us would ever sass a parent, or other adults. Our fathers usually had a way to take care of these problems before they got out of hand. I have wondered what is the difference from today when a kid will even cuss his mother or dad? Could it be that our parents, even those who did not profess being Christian taught us the bible truths of honor your parents, honor God, be honest. Just wondering. Seems like today’s kids are missing out on growing up and maturing without a lot of pain for them and their parents. Bob Lane

Bob, I'm in agreement with you. Somewhere along the way the idea of never spanking a child that was disobedient or giving extra work to compensate for damage done was thought of as "cruel and unusual punishment". My response is that living without boundaries is cruel and unusual. That child seems lost and doesn't know where he is or if his parents even care! I expect that there are a few that will say that might doesn't make right and that spanking (not beating!) encourages the child to be violent. I think that there is a lot of violence that has been perpetrated by children that were never spanked. The kids today say that I will respect those who respect me. How do they earn the respect that they demand? Do they even know how to respect anyone?

I am not able to drop in often at this time, but something Margo said in one of her posts, about that Fifth Street Bunch got me to thinking. I hope some of you can relate and enjoy it. Love, Bob Lane
That old Fifth Street gang.
Think with me back many a year, Of skinned knees and hands, and often a tear; How boisterous our laughter, how great was our joy, Just us Fifth Street kids with a brand new toy. Kids in the street with sunshine above, That old Fifth Street gang that I love.......
Time is running out now, accounting time you know. Those Fifth Street friends; their good oats did sow. To make a little difference, to change some of our world Is what the Savior asks of those He loves, those He died for?
**************** Dear Bob, WHAT AN AWESOME WAY WITH WORDS !! I just now found your poem, and I feel HONORED to know you and ALL THE FIFTH STREET BUNCH! I really feel the children today are missing that feeling of belonging to a neighborhood, and being taught to be respectful of others. My heart aches for them sometimes, when I hear some of the words coming out of their mouths. And then to hear a parent say " I don't know what to do with him?"
I thank God each day I had parents who loved me enough to teach me core values, even if sometimes it was taught at the end of a peach gad!!
Oh how I wish the world would swing back from the "permissive pendulum" and return to "RESPECT OTHERS AT ALL TIMES". We see this in the Children that attend Church, and I encourage everyone reading this page to invite a child to come to Church, if possible. Remember always...:God Loves YOU, and so do I" Blessings, Margo

I hope we don't have to put the 1940's folder to rest just yet. Joy Deckard has provided me with some pictures, and some of them you folks might remember:

David, I agree with you completely; please do not delete or move this subject off the site. Still lots more that I am sure people will share. Look at the fact that there are 8 pages already!
Those two items Joy gave you sure do bring back memories. I wonder how many people remember the stamps that allowed our parents to buy particular items. My dad said I always wore my shoes out before anyone else, so they had to use some of their coupons to buy me more shoes. (I am still very hard on my shoes to this day.)
I also remember as a kid during the war taking a few cents to school to buy the stamps to fill in our books to buy war bonds.
Also knowing Joy as I do, I am sure she has lots more to contribute to this subject.
Have a great day, :-) Babs

Joy Deckard has contributed so much to the website, it would sorely lacking without her involvement.

And I sure second Babs, this folder should stay. There is so much history within, and people keep adding to it. That is what makes these message boards so special. For me, I think I have barely scratched the surface of things my mom has saved-----but finding the time to get through it-------and get it posted, another whole tale. Nanc

Ricky, So sorry I could not make it last night. Just too full a schedule. My son-in- law did much of the special wood items in the building, and I would have loved to see how they all turned out. Maybe another time... Margo

5th Street Gang Next to the Records' house on Union Street was the Welmers. "Bird" Welmer and his mom and dad lived next door to the Records. Steve Welmer the famous NCAA Basketball referee is the son of "Bird" and that was Steve's grandparents next door.

Bob, I believe the Beirlien family spelled their name this way. Will have to check on that.
Tom Mueller is in my class of '55, played clarinet, and tap danced. I believe he lived between 5th and 6th on California st. Will have to check with him on that. He has a car lot on the corner of 17th and Central and Lonnie Jenkins ( same class) is one of his salesmen.
I also had an inquiry about Ken (Bucky) Smith from the same class. He did not make our reunion. Does anyone have any info on him or Ronnie Mobley? Had severasl ask about both of them.

Do you remember these ?, bet ours didn't have a bar code on them. The price was a little less, the days of 1cent and 5 cent candy are of days gone by.

Throughout the 1940's, Arch Oboler brought tales of the strange to the radio listening public through his Lights Out program. By the time I was old enough to know what a radio was, television had taken its entertainment spot. Being almost Halloween, here are a couple of items from an album Arch Oboler released in 1962. The first track, Mr. Oboler provides an introduction: This second offering is from one of the Lights Out programs. It's entitled "The Dark."

Apparently from the email I receive, there are quite a few people out there that have old bottles from the H C Whitmer Company. Can anyone shed any info on the Company?
