Re: Recollections of the Twenties « Richard said: Reply #15 on Yesterday at 11:22pm » First, Richard that was fantastic research and interesting about F. J. Meyer Dry Goods, and all the related working locations etc. Second, I didn't recall the store until you mentioned the weight scales, but now I do. I recall standing as my family too would check the scales etc. I was a young guy at that time and can't remember the year. As for the Queensware I think my grandmother and mother had a couple pieces of that pottery. They were used as mixing bowls for pancakes and other delights. Unfortunately, I don't have those antique bowls now, but do have the Wedgwood English bowls and Flow Blue plates, bowls, cups, etc. in our collection. 1st Paige 1910Also, Nancs' and Ricky's Paige Vehicle information was new to me also. That was interesting and the Count Newsom and Sawin brief. Thanks for all the puzzle pieces about both businesses in Columbus' past.

After a request by RER, I’ve checked a 1953 Columbus City Directory and found that at that time 536 Jackson Street was the location of the Greyhound Bus Terminal and the Terminal Lunch.
Leppert Bus Lines and Leppert Auto Parts Inc. address was 534 and Pennsylvania Rail Road Passenger and Freight Station was located at 542 Jackson Street.

In 1965 it was the Driftwood Inn, which I assume was a bar.

Sawin Garage Building Area Usage History536 Jackson Street Columbus Indiana Re: Ricky said: Recollections of the Twenties « Reply #22 on Today at 1:59pm » Ricky, you are right it was a Bar and an eating establishment, but mostly a bar. This is an interesting series of uses for this building and remodeling, which I didn't know until all the information gathered herein. I recall in 1957 or 1958 I helped my uncle put a new ceiling in the Driftwood Inn Bar. He was a full-time policeman and part-time carpenter. So lets summarize this building: One: 536 Jackson Street was the Sawin Automobile Garage in 1919 to 1929 or later. Then around 1928 or so Ockland Garage at 536 Jackson Street. Two: Then it became the Bus Station in the rear portion. This was in the 1950s for sure. Three: Then at some point the Jackson Street side of the building became the Driftwood Inn. Yes, I recall having a beer there once and a sandwich when I was home from the service. I think Swain Garage was behind the Driftwood Inn space because the buildings interconnected I believe. This was in the 1950s and 1960s for sure. Four: Building was torn down many years ago to make room for the Cummins complex and Mill Park areas.Next door to the building was the Carmichael's Fish Sandwich house. Carmichael Fish House was at 544 Jackson Street. The railroad tracks from 4th, 5th, 6th and Washington Streets crossed next to the area in route to Cerealine and the other track connections at that time. Below is a compressed picture of the location of Sawin Garage (or Driftwood Inn) area showing the railroad rails in those days. The teal color is the Sawin Garage area and the orange is Cerealine Manufacturing Company. The teal color building on Jackson Street, closest to the rails is Sawin/Driftwood Inn building position area.

1929 Vintage (antique) Calendars Mellinger Tire & Rubber Company7th & Washington StreetsColumbus, Indiana Comment: I normally wouldn't post a website like this one, but it provides a little Columbus Indiana 1929 activity and a unknown business to me. You can double click the first left side picture to enlarge it, but the others don't seem to enlarge. The business must have liked the ladies pictures because all of them are female. I am not promoting sales of these calendars, just directing you to interesting old calendars. I suppose a person could use these as a decorative arrangement, if so desired. Go here: www.vanitytreasures.com/miscellaneous_items/calendars/01.htm

While researching my book on the Crump Theatre, I ran across this interesting piece of our history:
From The Evening Republican, April 13, 1929:
New Boys Club Rooms Will Be opened Monday
The headquarters of the newly organized Boys' Clubs, established in the old Washington school building* will be opened officially Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock, according to an announcement made today by officers of the Columbus Foundation For Youth. The club is being sponsored by the Foundation, which also is backing the Boy Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls here.
A format opening of the new club rooms will not be made until later, probably the following Saturday. The formal opening will be marked by a program and the presentation of a picture of the late William E. Barnaby to the Boys club. Mr. Barnaby was president of the Foundation at the time of his death and was a leader in the movement to establish a Boys club here. His picture will be hung in the club's headquarters.
Everett Brown, an assistant in the physical education department of the local schools, will be in charge of the club rooms when they are opened Monday. He will be there from 4 until 5:30 in the afternoon and then the place will be closed until 6:30, when it will be re-opened. The final closing time for the night will be 9 o'clock.
The old school building has been refinished on the inside and fitted up with a number of snooker and pocket billiard tables, games of other kinds, chairs, tables and the like. Certain restrictions are imposed on the boys, of course, and Mr. Brown will keep a complete check on the games.
Boys between the ages of 14 and 21 are entitled to senior memberships in the club, while those under 14 will be admitted as junior members. Membership cards may be obtained now from Miss May Conner, in the office of Donald DuShane, superintendent of city schools.
