I moved the following Post from The Present: Columbus Indiana Today:
New Central Middle School deserves smooth transition
By John Quick
BCSC superintendent
WITH the new Central Middle School approaching completion, it is time to make plans to say good-bye to the existing school.
Excited as we are about the prospect of providing a 21st century learning environment for our students, we know that the community's emotional ties to the existing Central Middle School are strong and deep. Many will be sad to see the building demolished.
Our goal is to make a seamless transition this summer from the old to the new while meeting our project schedule, budget, and minimizing the environmental and emotional impact. Some of the site work, including the removal of the existing trees, will begin as early as spring break.
In June, the old building must be removed so that the Seventh Street bus lanes and the on-site car traffic lanes can be constructed during the eight weeks of summer. The football field, track and other landscaping will be completed by Thanksgiving.
We have studied the transition challenges for many months. Preliminary plans will be discussed at the regular School Board meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Northside Middle School. Please join us in this important discussion.
Many significant elements of the existing CMS are already a part of the new CMS and include:
The limestone marker "Central School" has
been placed on the west side.
The limestone marker "The Hope of Our Country" has been placed on the east side.
The sculpture "Pan" will be placed in an alcove in the performing arts area.
Two 1916 lamp posts will be placed in the west parking lot.
Other interior architectural features may be reused in the new building as well. Much of the existing furniture will be shared with other BCSC schools based on their needs. We also anticipate a community auction of surplus items during the first week of June.
The Bartholomew County Historical Society is partnering with BCSC in providing a "last dance" event in the existing CMS on May 19. It is our hope that we will be able to provide an almost-finished sneak preview of the new CMS on that same day.
The dedication of the new building is likely to be scheduled for the first week of August. An insert featuring the new CMS will be published and distributed in The Republic before the dedication.
We know the demolition of the existing Central Middle School will be viewed as a loss by many former students, teachers and long-time Columbus residents.
However, the new CMS will be a terrific place to learn for generations to come, and it is now time to start the transition. We invite you to attend the board meetings to learn more about how we plan to honor the school's history and celebrate its future.
My door is always open and I welcome the chance to visit with you or your community group, day or evening.[/size]
