"Clifty Grade School In The 1950s"
After my time at the 25th Street Barracks many students were transferred to Clifty Grade School on the hill parallel with Clifty Creek. I and many students including Rocky Ford Road kids transferred to Clifty and it was closer to our home. This building and Booth-Setser were built almost identical in shapes, materials and structures at that time in the early 1950s. The outside was white painted metal with lots of windows and a circle front drive. A very huge play ground at Clifty.
I attended Clifty from 1954 through 1956. Two teachers and sports coaches stand out in my mind. Robert Liggett and Robert Rouse (Principal/coach) were my teachers and coaches during sports events. Mr. Rouse transferred from the 25th Street Barracks to Clifty. Some of my classmate names were: Jeff Crump, Milton Hendry, Steve Clark, Mike Small, Bob Trisler, Bob Hamilton, Jack Johns, Virgil Lambert, Bob Grow, Dennis Piercefield, Gary Brand, Bob Baldwin, Jim Helper, Dean Henderson, Tom McIntire, Ray Malan, Myron Finchum, Judy Edwards, Connie Pogue, Joyce Axsom, Bonnie Fording and many more but I can't recall all of them.

"Grade School Basketball Before School Consolidations"
Back in the 1950s it seemed every grade school had basketball, and baseball teams for the 7th and 8th Grades. With Central High School being the only high school at that time, a wealth of feeder basketball players were available for the Columbus Freshman, Pups and Bulldogs teams. If you look at the list of grade schools there were many teams playing each other throughout the years.
Clifty had a cafeteria in the middle of the school length. Coach Robert Rouse erected basketball goals at each end of the cafeteria ceilings. During basketball season the players would remove all of the cafeteria tables and chairs to the building hallways for temporary storage until practice was over. After practice was complete, then we had to move the furniture back in and set it up for the next day. I recall playing in many school gyms and the High School Pearl Street Gym as a grade schooler. Others, included Petersville, Taylorsville and others.

Very cool to see a picture of Bob Rouse,he was the principal at the Booth-Setser school when I was there in maybe 1961 or so.I recall that he cut me a major break when I was just a smartass little kid with not much common sense.45 years later,I will still never forget that.I wonder now if kids still appreciate their educators when they help them out.I sure hope so.

"Clifty Grade School In The 1950s" This building and Booth-Setser were built almost identical in shapes, materials and structures at that time in the early 1950s. The outside was white painted metal with lots of windows and a circle front drive. Actually, the old Clifty school, Booth-Setser, Kent, and Wayne Township were all virtually identical. That type building must have been available in some sort of pre-fab kits.

Clifty School Picture In The 1950sAs Texaco said it looks like these school buildings were pre-fabricated type materials. The long portion of this picture was the cafeteria during the school day hours, and then a basketball gym during the evening after school hours. Lower grades were conducted on the left end, and higher grades on the right end.

These buildings (Cilfty & Boothsetser) were built by Force Construction at a cost of something like $10,000. My parents Bill and Wilma McCoy were in charge of the committee to raise money for Columbus Township to build new schools right after the end of WWII. I still get copies of the newspaper articles from friend that show that I donated the first $1.00 from my savings of 25 cent weekly allowance. The powers to be wanted to used the money to consolidate the schools and build the township schools later. They didn't know my mother Wilma very well. After the township schools were built there was no problem in consolidating the schools. Jerry McCoy. mccoyjl@juno.com

I went to Clifty in 57 as first grader. Had Ms / Mrs Beldon as a teacher. Remember she made me stand in the corner for running in the hall. Also was there in the third grade. Had Ms / Mrs Raffingnon, don't think that is spelled correctly. Kept in touch with her up until just before she passed away. The principle at that time was Mr Whiteman. His secretary was killed during a lightning storm as I recall. Also kept in touch with him for several years. Great memories.

I attended Clifty in the late fifties for all 6 years. My brother Terry Weekly was one of the students that you mention later playing basketball for the Bulldogs. I played 6th grade basketball and softball. It seems the coach was my Hammer (?). Mrs Smith was my first grade teacher. I dirt basketball goals on the playground for the 1st - through 3 grades, then we moved to the basketball courts (paved) on the 4 - 6th grade side (north side of school). Our starting team was Bill Bohn, Tim James, Larry Nolting, Jim McDaniels and myself. Good stuff.

At our event to be held this June 27th at the Donner Park shelter house, from 9 to 4, there will be a table with pictures and yearbooks from Clifty school. If you attended there and had Mr. Freese as a teacher it is possible you will find your picture. Most are unnamed and undated so they will just be out in boxes and will require some sorting to locate yourself; however, the pictures are free to anyone who wants them.
Plan to come out to the shelterhouse and stir up old memories and who knows maybe you will find an old boy or girl friend, a picture of yourself or a favorite teacher. There will be yearbooks, individual pictures, pictures of basketball teams, group pictures of classes and group pictures of teachers.

Mr. Freese was the best teacher I ever had in all my years at any school. He knew how to teach many things in stories and ways to reach you on a personal level like you ment something. You could tell he really cared for all the kids he taught. I have thought about him for many years and what had became of him. I have the newspaper clipping where he retired in 1980 and a picture showed him reading the invite to my graduation I had sent to him. He is the man that made me into who I am today.

By mb2foru at 2009-04-18 Mr Freese from 5th grade teacher at Clifty and State Street article that was in June 7th 1980 Columbus Republic about his retirement. He is shown reading the invatation to my gradution I sent him in May 1980 a few weeks before the article. I truly loved this man for his kindness and caring he showed me during some of the hardest years of my life back then. He never knew it but my mother had terminal cancer back at the time and I was suffering from what was happening at home and some how he treated me as if he knew. I looked forward to going to school with him as a teacher. After becoming an engineer and a certified trainer I taught electronics at the company I worked after hours for lower level employees that wanted to get ahead. How I taught was learned from how Mr Freese had energized me to learn in his classes.

I think i must have started at Clifty in 58 or 59 not sure, but I do remember some good times there. We lived just down the hill from the school on Hartsville Pike. I remember many a cold day walking to school. It seemed like a mile but was probably a very short distance. I had Mrs Swartzwood (sp) for 5th grade and I remember playing on the basketball team. I think Mr. Liggett was the coach.
