The most logical place to check out information and pictures of our high school on 25th Street is the Yearbook link on the Historic Columbus Indiana website.
Property on 25th Street was bought in 1936, with plans of building an elementary school. However, in 1946, the property was sold, and 40 acres of land north of 25th Street between Home Avenue and Maple Street was purchased. On Sunday, November 30, 1954, the Memorial Gymnasium was "open for business." This was known as Unit A, with Unit B (Columbus Senior High School) opening in the fall of 1956. Columbus Senior High School would stand as the only high school until it succumbed to the same fate as the Central building: it was just too small. Columbus East opened its doors in 1972.
The gym on 25th Street was erected in record pace: 90 days, and was the 4th largest in the entire state of Indiana!

Here's an aerial photo of Columbus High School, taken in 1964/65. Note 25th Street was a two lane road, and only a couple of trees in front of the school building!

This information is from the Looking Back column on December 4, 2007, in ‘The Republic’. 1957 was the year and Columbus High School Principal Judson Erne announced that a 2-hour final exam for each subject at the school would be used.

I am a 1969 graduate of CHS, and am wondering if anyone knows of a reunion being planned.

I've been meaning to post this for at least a good week now, but forgot about it until now.
They have cut down most of the trees in front of Columbus North High School (I believe they planted them in either my class of 1970 or a year before or later). The only trees remaining are the ones closest to the sidewalk along 25th St.
Looks kind of strange to see the building once again. It was always so hidden amongst all those trees.

Aerial Views Of Columbus North High School Complex Taken October 22, 2010 By Mr. John W. Green, CNHS Vice Principal 25th Street Columbus, Indiana Comment: It sure has changed over the past 53 years. More buildings and parking lots. The football/track field is immaculate for a high school. Many talented, successful, famous people have walked many hours in these halls and facilities. Some of the best teachers in Indiana have made us all successful with foundations, goals, and accomplishments in life. Picture One Picture Two Picture Three Picture Four Special Thank You To:John W. Green, MPA Assistant Principal Columbus North High School Mr. Green gave Columbus Historical Boards permission to post these pictures today, through an email request. Richard and I received his permission email.

Columbus North High School (CNHS)25th Street Columbus, Indiana Comment: The newer high school opened around 1957. It was still the only high school in Columbus after it opened. Before the the newer high school opened a small amount of grade school classes occupied the Northeast end of the front of this building picture. Over the years many expansions of buildings and landscaping has taken place. Vehicle parking lots surround the school these days. Columbus now has two high schools and the other is called Columbus East High School. Special Thank You To:John W. Green, MPA Assistant Principal Columbus North High School Mr. Green gave Columbus Historical Boards permission to post these pictures.

Aerial Views CHS (North School) 1957 & 2010 25th Street Columbus, IndianaWhat it was then and what it is now (picture span of 53 years). First picture is from the back side and the colored picture of course is from the front side for comparison. As you can determine new buildings have been added and additional parking lots. The baseball field was overtaken by the parking lot expansions. In the beginning no vehicle parking was permitted in the front of the school and no parking in front of the Gym because it was all grass and walks. Twenty-fifth Street and U.S. 31 is shown. Interesting Businesses During 1957:The side roads consisted of Maple Street down past the front of the Gym and Home Avenue on the other side of the facilities. At the corner of Home Ave and 25th Street was the building that housed Pasquale's Pizza and their hot sandwiches. Next door going West was the only Dairy Queen in town and next to it was a small record shop, then Becker's Root Beer. Over the past 53 years these places in general closed, changed names, but not Becker's Root Beer. The first Dairy Queen closed and later in years Bob Frankie opened his Dairy Queen on present 3rd Street. Special Thanks: To Mr. J. Green and his photo and Bartholomew Historical Site.
