Lindsey,
The first bracket of the ending 'bracket' / img 'bracket’ is in front of the address. I tried to move that but the address link isn't working.
I opened another browser window, pasted that address, and it came back that the link was password protected! It will need to be free of passwords for the board to process the link.
I've been working with some screen captures and was about ready to post. I’ve sent copies of them to Nancs, George, RER and David for their input. Yesterday, Nancs told me how she posted, but I was too dense to see. Today, she reworded her tip and it’s a great tip. I used it today with my posts and will be reworking my tip screens.
Hopefully, I’ll have a screen that will give you and others some help with posting pictures.
Richard

I am trying to post a picture of W D Richards At Garfield school some time in the late 1940's or early 1950's. Hi Lindsey! Sorry you're having some difficulty in posting your pic. I might be able to shed some light on things. I noticed you're using your SBC's "My Photos" Photo Storage. I tried to use this same thing for posting images. BUT, for some reason, you can only refer people to your photo albums for them to view your pics. As things stand right now, you cannot copy and paste the url of your picture to any other website (such as this one). The best thing to do is find a free hosting site, such as Image Shack ( imageshack.us/). I know there are other companies out there as well, but I'm not familiar with them. Some on this board use ImageShack, and that being the case, would be more help to you. Hope this helps![/size]

Great photo, Lindsey, love it. I would say that if the photo was taken before WD retired it would have been the late 40s, maybe 1948, his last year, I think. IF my calculations are close to right. WD retired the year I started 6th grade, and Delmar Rund came in as our new principal and 6th grade teacher. I am still searching for that 6th grade class photo with Mr. Rund, et al, know it is here, just where, remains a mystery!!!!!!!!!!!!! Babs, just an FYI, in this photo, the merry go round would have been just to the left side of this photo, and the swings to the right, with the slide on beyond that. Boy, Lindsay, this photo really came on the boards at the most perfect time for 'further discussion.' Note those 'back doors that I mentioned,' Babs. But yes, I loved to play hopscotch, too. Notice that single door on the right hand side of the photo, wasn't that the door that went to the boy's rest rooms, with a similar door on the left side that went to the girls' rest rooms? Help somebody, that is what I remember. Welcome, Lindsey!!!! You 'done good, no, make that GREAT!' Nanc

5th Grade team 1947-48 row-1 Noel McClintic, Jackie Larrison, Dave Lindsey, Don Holman, unknown row-2 Bill Peek, Lance Adams, Philipe Baumann, Coach Write, Eugene Main, Don McClintic, Mr. Richards. This team had boys from 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. I have more pictures I will post later. Maybe some of you can help me with the names of some of the students.

Oh, wow, Lindsey, we are of the 'same vintage.' Know all these people. I 'want to say' that your 'unknown' on row 1 was Philip Woods, but am not sure, didn't think he was all that interested in sports. And Woods might not have been his last name, he had a 'sister, Beverly.' Know her last name was Woods, but not sure about his. Check out my reply # 7 on this Garfield thread, page one, as I put a class photo in, and IDed most of the kids in that class. It says 1948, think that was 4th grade with Miss Yeagar, '49 would have been 5th, and that May would have been when WD retired. Me thinks. Nanc

Whoa, Lindsey, now I HAVE to find my 6th grade class photo, I know I have a copy in a storage unit, just can't find the original here at home!!!! Drat. Isn't the teacher in the class photo dated 1949-1950, Mr. Rund? ? Now I am really puzzling the dates. Ask Richard, he understands, now my brain is really in overdrive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D Nanc

Nanc, I simply do not remember any playground equipment. Not saying there wasn't any but also remember I left Garfield at the end of WWII, the last few weeks of my fifth grade. Is it possible that playground equipment could've been put in after we moved? I know most anything metal was used in the war effort, so it could be possible. I just remember playing hopskotch most of all and one time I had a lovely ring given to me by a great aunt; I decided to play hopskotch with it and yep, you got it right, I stepped on the ring and ruined it. I thought my mom would kill me but she just said "well, I think you've learned your lesson". I no longer had the ring and I think I did learn a valuable lesson.
I remember I was a Brownie and we held our meetings in the basement at Garfield but for the life of me I do not recall anything about the girls or boys bathrooms.

Hi to all, and yes, Babs, I remember that the Brownies met downstairs at Garfield in a room with a really heavy door. A finger caught in that door was when I learned what a 'blood blister was.' On hopscotch 'markers,' my favorite was a little key chain, the kind made of 'little metal beads,' man, they always landed where you wanted them to go. ;D Your ring story, Babs, made me recall using my watch for a Brownie clay project, it made the neatest indentations in the clay, didn't do much for the watch when the front of it stuck in the clay. Why is it, we have to learn some things the hard way? ? Where in the world was the long drinking fountain in that building? Was it upstairs in the open part, or downstairs??? I think the janitor at Garfield was Mr. Beatty, maybe a first name of Charles, and I sort of think he lived just across the street from the school. Name might be right, but the phone directory says Charles Beatty lived in the 1100 block of Hutchins, not in the 1200 block of Cottage. He was always so nice to the kids. Thanks, Lindsey for the IDs and the information. I've counted a jillion ways, (yes, I have been using my fingers to count! ) and 'think' that I was in 5th grade in the school year 1947-48 (am sort of wondering if Miss Yeagar taught 4th the year before, but can't be sure, she was NOT my favorite teacher, and I'd hate to think I had her two years in a row, but may be), 1948-1949 I was in 6th grade, and I do believe that was Mr. Rund's first year at Garfield. Did anyone else notice all the bikes sort of randomly parked in the photo of WD? I, for some reason, thought that we had a bike rack somewhere, maybe on the south side of the building. Lindsey, keep posting those photos, we love them. Most definitely a trip down Memory Lane, thanks for sharing. Nanc

Well, duh, Nanc!!!!!!!!!! According to the newspaper article about W D Richards retiring after 59 years, is dated May 29, 1948. I need to rescan this to make it readable, and post same. Guess I really didn't have to count on my fingers, after all!!! Nanc

nanc, You may recognize some of these boys. I think the boy 3rd from left in the first row is Larry Marshall. This isn't a real clear picture. You may be able to copy it to your computer and get a better look.

nanc, In the picture of Mr. Richards, if you look just behind him and to his left you will see the swing set.
In the picture of the boys on the playground look to the left of the boys and I think you will see someone on the merry-go-round.

In playing hopskotch, I normally used a really pretty small rock of some sort. That one day, I have no idea what got into me but I can still visualize that ring. It had a green stone (which my aunt told me was an emerald....I doubt it though) and was open cut filligree work, the stone was set in a diamond shaped mounting. It was just not a heavy ring and should've stayed on my finger but when we are young we do foolish things.
Everyone is saying we had playground equipment so I will give in but I still can't remember it. I remember playing on the equipment at Donner Park, and would've been really young then, but I can not recall any at school. Oh well, the memory is one of the first things to go, so they tell me! :-)
