The ice house was suppose to have been as you went over the hill road and turned right. It was the third house to your left,I think. Yes, there are survivors and I was one of them.I think we lived there for about 8yrs.I know we moved to East Columbus when I was about 12.My Father died when I was 5, and my Mother was left with 4 kids,no money and had to live there. Idon't know who would know this, but as I have passed the Mill Race Park where the new storm sewer is going in, I wonder if that will hurt the tree that was planted by Sylvia Wells and dedicated by the city. I do hope that it is bypassed. Bob Lane

I am sure they have it planned out very well on how to bypass the tree.It would be a dirty shame if they took out the tree.

I checked for sure and the tree is safe but the project came awfully close to it so I hope the root system is intact. I would urge you all to email Parks and Rec and let them know that we are concerned about preserving the tree. Nick Rush at Parks and Rec has always taken a personal interest in looking out for it: parks@columbus.in.gov Idon't know who would know this, but as I have passed the Mill Race Park where the new storm sewer is going in, I wonder if that will hurt the tree that was planted by Sylvia Wells and dedicated by the city. The following from 1959, is in the Looking Back feature in today’s edition of The Republic newspaper.
Buryl McFadden, owner of the property known as Death Valley, reported that two houses in the complex had been demolished. Rent on the remaining eight houses in the area range from $10.00 to $12.00 per month. The area is west of the railroad tracks.

Friends, I visited Mill Race park this weekend, and stopped to see the memory plate by Siliva's tree. To my shock I found the marbalized plate broken all the way across the width. Didn't appear to be vandalism but not sure. That hasn't been in place all that long. Whoever is in charge of that maintainance maybe could check it out, see if any guarantee exists. Shame to see this falling apart so quickly. Bob Lane

The Horrible White River Flood Around 1946 or 1947Death Valley (now Mill Race Park) Picture near 4th Street & Brown StreetColumbus, Indiana I know this brings back terrible living and flood memories to some, but it is unfortunate that it is part of Columbus History. White River in the picture is flooding the very poor folks of Death Valley. Source: From December 15, 1985, The Repulic Newspaper.

I could not imagine living in those conditions back then. I'll garauntee, however, that those conditions have made the survivors the strong people they are today. I also wanna add that it has been terrific learning about my city's colorful and lively history here on this board. Thank you to all who have added their history here.
My Grandma used to tell me how she had a few friends who lived there and it would hurt her heart every time she went to visit them.

Hi, I am one of those Death Valley Rats as some might have called us.I look at those pics especially the last on where it showed the flood around 48 or 47. I lived there at that time.Believe me it was not a very pretty site. It did make us grow to be Thankful that we servived all of that. But we were strong at heart and we all helped each and every one who needed our help.I just want too say it is not how rich or how fancy we are .It is what is in our Hearts that counts. We all walk on Gods earth and we are his children no matter how rich or poor. May God keep us all safe from harm.Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year

I moved away from Columbus in 1966. I was a member of the Columbus JCs for the last few years I lived there. One of the club's projects was helping the city with was Millrace Park. We put in a sewer line and helped with the ground preparation and seeding. As I recall, we had several project scrapbooks that were used in competion with outher JC clubs around the state. There is a fair chance that someone currently in the Jaycees could help you run down those scrapbooks and photos.
