History Of Senior Cords For The Class of 1957 Reunion In July 2007This may help answer most questions during your July 2007 reunion This is a brief summary based only on "word of mouth" and reviewing the CHS Logs from 1950 through 1970. It could be incorrect by a year, but my best calculation is it commenced during the Class of 1955 and ended around the Class of 1969. Several members of this board had comments as well as friends in the Columbus area and other states. So, I have given it my best shot to reveal this age old question. Here are some samples of the "Senior Cords" over the yearsYear 1955 (The Beginning) ____________ 1956... Class of 1957 ___ 1960 Cords 1960______ 1961.. Last Class of 1969 for Senior Cords Note: If someone has a class beyond 1969 that did cords, please post and tell us, but I think 1969 the tradition ended on a sad note for Columbus High School history. Celebrating 50 Years Graduation Reunion July 7, 2007First Three Years Of Columbus High School (CHS) & Last Senior Year At New School The Class of 1957 utilized the Pearl Street Gym for three years before moving to 25th Street & Home Avenue. The old Gym was built in 1924 and the new Gym built in 1955. Swimming continued at the Pearl Street Gym for many years, but basketball for CHS played its final games in 1954 season. The new Gym was used by the football and basketball teams during the 1955-1957 seasons. Students of this class still used the Pearl Street Gym for classes and various function while the 25th Street CHS Gym was in full swing. Then in 1957 all of this classes athletic functions and sports, except swimming was performed at the new facility. Notice an extension on the Pearl Street Gym to the right. It served as a music area and was added before 1970. As we know the Pearl Street Gym was opened in 1924 with a host of athletics, sports, classes both men and women participating. The 1924 Gym provided the hub for organized school classes of various subjects beyond athletics. Even swimming was introduced that year in basement of Pearl Street Gym. Interesting is the fact that CHS basketball prior to the Pearl Street Gym was played on the second floor of old City Hall located on 5th Street & Franklin Street. The Pearl Street facility is scheduled to be torn down at the completion of Junior High School year 2007. Pearl Street Gym (old gym) Home Avenue Gym (new gym)Note: These pictures are placed here for the benefit of those 1957 Class members to enjoy. The Historical Columbus Web Site wishes you the best of fun and good times at your reunion. The colored picture is provided by Richard.

Further Confirmation Of Columbus High School the and Boys Club Located on Present Day Pearl StreetQuote:"The manufacturing interests of the town were so prosperous, and gave such a steady and substantial growth to the city, that it was but a short time until the problem of more room was again present. It was decided to erect a city school. The work begun in June 1886 and was completed and ready for use by the opening of the schools in the following September. The building stands on Pearl Street between 7th and 8th Streets and is now used by the Boy's Club. The enrollment in March 1888, was near 1,200 and 107 were high school students." End Quote.Source: The Log 1933 within, page 72 As It Stands Today:Comment: Columbus should post a brief decorative historical sign on the premises to indicate this information. Bob

Hi to all, and I, for one, absolutely LOVE the Log ads that Richard has been posting. Most especially, I like the ones showing the interiors of the businesses. As an example, the Simmen Hardware Co. on page 3 in the class of 57 section. Note in the upper left corner, just to the left of a post, is the ladder that was on a track. A clerk could move and climb the ladder to access the wanted item from a high shelf. As a little kid, that ladder always fascinated me. Thanks for sharing all these ads, Richard. Nanc
