Here is another ad from the Columbus Senior High School 1957 Log. Was Berry's House Of Records in the same location as Tom Pickett's store in the 1960's?

Thanks marksix. By the time I started going to CHS in the fall of 1967, it was gone. I'm trying to remember what was there after Berry's moved out.

Berry's Record Shop It seems to me that when Berry's closed it became a vacuum cleaner sales store. Very small building as I recall. Bob

This information from 1957 was in the Looking Back column in today’s paper. WCSI broadcaster Jerry Castor crowned Columbus High School junior Sandy Gallagher as Jive Kennel queen. ____________________________________________________ Can anyone explain to me why no one, paper included, wants to use the correct name of the high school starting with the class of 1957? When the twenty-fifth building opened in the fall of 1956, the name of the three-class high school became Columbus Senior High School and remained until Columbus opened a second high school when the twenty-fifty building became Columbus North High School.

Class of 1957 Introduced The Victory Bell But When Did The Dog Appear ?The student council introduced the Victory Bell in 1957
Age of Bell 50Now What Class Introduced The Rolling Bulldog ?My guess is 1954 or 1955 and it was designed and built at the Maple Street Gym. I could be wrong so we need help here! Age of Rolling Dog 53 (if still barking)The dog was built with chicken wire, glue, paper and paint. Is the dog still rolling in 2007 ?Is the bell still ringing ?Bob

Bob, I've never seen the rolling bulldog, so think it had to come on to the scene after 1953, which is when I graduated. Its obviously at a ball game as the cheer leaders are jumping around the dog. I'm sure it was not there when I was in high school.
Oh something I just noticed, look at the front of the sign on the dog....it says 59 58...so that could be the school year that this "dog" was made? Or have they just written the particular year this picture was taken? No idea.

Hi Babs,
Ref: Rolling Dog
Just got emails from 3 former students and they said it was never in the Pearl Street Gym as you said. They do remember it for the basketball seasons of 1954-1955 and 1955-1956. So I guess it is traced to that year range. The picture was taken from a later Log for viewing of subject.

Most interesting posts and questions regarding the 'moving Bulldog.' Along those lines, the art teacher, Mr. Karl McCan, pops immediately into my head. I know that I did have him as an art teacher, and am thinking he maybe even taught junior high art classes, and within these 'fuzzy memories,' I am wondering if his classroom might have actually been in the Wilson building? Perhaps in a south-west corner room upstairs? I can so remember that prior to the Jr./Sr. proms that the hallways outside his class room would be lined with elaborate 3-D decorations for the proms. Truly, works of art. And my guess says that Mr. McCan and his students would have 'created' the moving Bulldog in question. Not that it really 'has anything to do with anything,' but one of Mr. McCan's assignments was to design a 'signature' using one's initials---------which I did, and still make use of that signature today. I did 'put out a feeler' this AM, to see if someone could help pinpoint a date for 'the Bulldog.' Must be feeling better now, as I realize I am 'getting wordier' again!!!! ;D Nanc

I went to a North basketball game a couple of years ago, and do not remember seeing either the rolling Bulldog, or the bell.

Joy and I had a short discussion earlier today about the "mascot" and we decided that when we were in school, the cheer leaders ran out on to the floor carrying a small stuffed bulldog, so we are positive we never saw the rolling bulldog.
Also with Nancy being "artistic", she is probably on the right trail; think someone needs to contact any former students they know of who were in art classes. This is most likely right where the bulldog would've been constructed.
The time frame of 1954 forward looks to be pretty much on track. :-)
