New Idea Home Economics Club 7-8-49 The above is a picture of members of the New Idea Home Ec Club. Am thinking that these kinds of clubs were organized out of Mr. Keesling's office, along with 4-H activities. Rather recall that there was a variety of literature available to these ladies, and they presented demonstrations at their meetings using that material. The joke around in my family, still and yet----Nanc, what is your favorite color----red or green? My response has ALWAYS been "purple." (To this day, my mom will ask me that question when we take her out in my "purple" PT Cruiser.) Purple was NOT a popular color when I was growing up, and only became available in clothing items about the time I was in Jr. High. My mom had to give some demonstration for her home ec club about painting rooms. In the literature, something was mentioned that kids should have the right to choose the color for their room. RIGHT ON!!! Mom told me she guessed she should "practice what she preached," and the next time my room was to be painted------it would be "purple." And purple it eventually was. Remember going to great lengths to get the colors mixed. Then to find fabric for curtains was a real chore. Seems to me that we finally found it in a store called "Mill End" on Washington, perhaps around 8th - 10th St. Thanks to my mom----for allowing me to have my passion for purple. AND for saving so many treasures, and having the forethought to actually ID so much of it. Hope that others will share some of their memories. That is what makes these message boards so much fun. Nanc

i'm new to the boards and was in the Bartholomew County Saddle Club in the late 60's and 70's. The bean supper tradition continued on, and many a fall evening we would gather at Donna and Del Routson's farm on Mauxferry Rd. over a huge pot of baked beans cooked in the manner described, and all the great things our moms brought. Those who didn't board horses there trailered theirs over and we kids rode into the night. It was wonderful. I recognize Walt Baxter- I believe his son Terry bought the Rouston's place in the late 70's. I also recognize Dick Wetzel. He had a big place, as I recall, and we had fun shows out there often. Can't quite remember where it was though.
I am so happy to have found this site!

Welcome, welcome, welcome, Wendy. Have so loved to hear from you. And yes to Terry Baxter, his folks sponsored the Jr. Trail Blazers when I was a kid. And yes, to Dick Wetzel, did you check out the Trail Blazer photo I posted, he might have been in it? Terry would have been too young at that point to be in the picture. And those bean dinners, something else, huh, think I posted a photo of my dad 'stirring the pot' at the Saddle Club Grounds over at the end of 8th St. What great times we had. Okay, JK, who was the guy who rode a black and white pinto/paint, think his name was Bob something----lived out in the country, and recall that one Saddle Club Halloween party was held at his place? His horse looked a lot like Lonnie's Judy horse. Bear with me, Wendy, I do a lot of this memory stuff via the horses people had!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-) The people name might escape me, but..........! Anyway, welcome, Wendy, this is just the greatest place to jar one's Columbus memories. We love it here. Later. Nanc

Hi Nanc....The Bob you made reference to could be Bob Wagner. He was a farmer and rode a pinto very similar to my horse Betty. Other than Bob Enochs, he is the only Bob I can think of that was in the saddle club. Bob Wagner was in one of your photos you posted of the drill team taken at the saddle club ground.

Thanks, Nanc, I appreciate the warm welcome! And I too remember the horses more than the people sometimes! I did see your photos and they are what inspired me to post! I'm sure that is Dick Wetzel in the photo. Does anyone remember where Wetzel's farm was? It may be still there. It had a big indoor arena as I recall.
Again, thanks, and I will be regular here!

Hello Wendy. I believe the Wetzel barn was on road 450 north at the east side of the Haw Creek. From Columbus you would go north on Marr Road to 450 North which is a little over half way along the airport and turn right. The Wetzel barn is about one and ½ miles on the left/north side of the road. The barn sets at the intersection of 450 north and Talley Road. Talley Road runs north from 25th Street which was SR 46 East, just west of the Sand Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Wetzel operated the Horse Barn at the Brown County State Park for years. I’m not sure if he still runs that barn but do know that he has also been an Auctioneer for several years.

Hi, and JK, you are absolutely correct about Bob Wagner, and it had slipped my mind to check out that photo of the Saddle Club drill team. And Richard, you are saying that Dick Wetzel ran the barn out at Brown County? Didn't know that. Just remember all the great Saddle Club trail rides that we did out there!!!! Plus went to a good many horse shows there, as well. Nanc

Hi Richard and Nanc- that sounds right! That was back before I had my driver's license (when you've got horses, who needs a driver's license?! at least that's how I felt back then) so I couldn't remember the exact roads. That sure seems like where it was. Thanks, and now when I go back to visit I may just drive by it. I always drive by the Routson's (then Baxter's) place on 500W.
I used to love trail riding in Brown County! My oldest son and his wife just went camping over there in the fall. I think I instilled a love of southern Indiana in my kids too!

nanc: I am not very good at corresponding, but I was a member of the Trail Blazers. and I was also in the same 4 H club. I read all the postings on your board. Quite a memory jerker. I don't remember the mouse but do you remember the parrot at Tovey's? You mentioned Steve Enochs. My brother now lives in Florida. He was eight years younger than I so he only came along with me to a lot of the events. He would ride on the back a lot when we came over to your house. Remember my dog also would ride on behind me now and then. Do you remember the ride to Brown County State Park? I remember the police excorted us to the big bridge over White River then made us ride across the bridge one at a time because they were afraid we might set up a cadence and bring the bridge down. I see Sharon at least once a month. I called her when your name appeared in Harry's Column in The Republic. mfaure -

Hi Margie, and yes, yes, I remember-----and WELCOME TO THE BOARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I do remember that dog riding on the horse. Almost think that in some of the photos that I have there is a picture of your dog. I don't recall the police escort, tho'. But, Brown County outings, absolutely, and a ton of fun, huh> Do tell Sharon that I said hi. She is in a lot of the photos that I have, some of which I have posted. Hope that you all are marking July 15th on your calendars, so we can all get together and just gab. Sounds like so much fun. Nanc

Hi, and it is strange the things that we remember from our childhood----Margie, do you recall------and I am thinking it was a 'group of Saddle Club folks' that got together at your house, as I rather remember, in addition to our moms, Edna Talkington, Dessie Jenkins, maybe Mildred Fox-----all in the front room. Seems like the men were out back. The 'women and us girls' were doing 'something' with a card table, and in my mind, they might have called it a 'ouija board.' You rubbed your hands together, then put them on the table, asked a question, and 'the table responded' by one leg or another raising off the floor in answer to the question. I can remember, kid-like, getting down on my hands and knees to try and see 'just who was making this table do its tricks!' ;D In my youthful eyes this was surely spectacular, as it seemed to me that this 'table' was remarkably smart in its responses. Just a rather strange, 'off the wall' memory, for sure. Nanc

Sure do remember that now that I think about it. We were in our basement and the guys were out in back playing basketball. Seems they also tried to raise the table completely by just puting their hands on it. Of course we had to try after mom's had their go at it. I think it had something to do with static electricity.

One of the amazing things about the message boards, is that one rather simple little memory can actually become a learning experience when explored. You 'gotta love' technology!!!! ;D As Margie mentioned, I have always sort of thought that this 'ouija board' somehow operated via static electricity. This morning, I found this information on the internet, www.prairieghosts.com/table.htmlabout 'Table Tipping' and how it was a fairly common 'parlor game.' Even includes a photo, and just about like the way I remember it working. This is probably about as close as we might come to explaining this evening of entertainment that we both recall. The article mentions that strange sounds might be heard, as well. And it does seem to me that we had to be very quiet as this all was taking place. Perhaps some of the 'noises' that we 'heard' were nothing more than a bouncing basketball in the game out back!!! ;D Ah, the memories!!!! Nanc

Nanc: Margie here: We have a lot of mentioning of the Saddle Club but we need to get some of the other organizations buzzed up about this meeting in July. Have you contacted the Chamber of Commerce? I bet the Lions might be interested or the River Rats. Course it's hard to know about the River Rats now with Carl gone. But I am sure some of them might be interested. The Senior Center might want to set up a promotional table for the new center. What about a bycycle club. I am pretty sure there are some. Maybe they could put on an old fashioned bycycle parade. With cards on the spokes. Fun!!!!
gotta go later

Hi, and Margie, it has been so long since I have lived in Columbus, like over 50 years, altho' that doesn't seem possible-----unless I note the gray hairs----- ;D ---the Saddle Club memories are the ones that I seem to recall. As to other clubs and organizations, boy, I would be at a loss, as to what groups might have existed, or who would be willing to contribute to the get together in July. Wish that I could help, but think I am fairly useless on that score. Nanc

What about Rainbow for Girls and DeMolay? I remember attending many formal dances down on Washington street. I think it was the meeting room for the Eastern Star?? Clark F.

Hi Clark, et al, and yes, I remember Rainbow. Seems to me that ballroom dancing classes were offered, and perhaps in that same room, to 'prepare us' for the formal dances. Here, my memories, will tend to cover CA and IN. Being a member of Rainbow in Columbus, I came to CA and was prepared to transfer my membership. Here, Job's Daughters was the main Masonic affiliation and only a very, very insignificant number of girls were in Rainbow. It was nearly a non-existent group. In checking, etc. back then. My understanding was: In Columbus 'they' decided to choose Rainbow as the girls' group, as it would serve more young ladies, as a Masonic 'blood' line was not necessary. And I don't believe that a Job's Daughters even existed, just Rainbow. Out here, Job's Daughters had the huge membership, and altho' I 'qualified' for that, I had to keep with Rainbow. And was not allowed to change to the more active group. Please feel free to 'correct' my memories. But I do think that is why there was Rainbow in Columbus, and no Job's Daughters. Nanc

Hi Nanc! Thanks for the response. I was always just an escort to those dances...I think most all with the same girl! I had friends who were in DeMolay but I think it was probably too rich for my blood..Ha! I just had a good suit and always got the girl a corsage!! I'd forgotten the link to the Masons and all that. I do remember hearing of Job's Daughter's 'round these parts but didn't realize that all that hierarchy came so much into play! Does any of that still exist today?? Clark
