Nanc.... indeed there was a airfield at the location of State St and Gladstone Ave. I remember it being in the late 1930's, the runway ran north and south parallel to the county road that is now Gladstone Ave., there was a two story building on the corner at State and Gladstone, the lower part was a gas station. I still remember seeing the old airplanes, bi-planes and even an old tri-motor ford that was made of metal at the time. About a block west of that building on the corner of State and Gladstone, was a small building that was used by the local model airplane club. The Garden City air field was located about a mile south of the 2nd. St. bridge. It was opened right after the war, in 1946 or 47 by a man that had been a pilot in the war, his last name was Turner. The old quon.set hut that he used for his office stood on that site for years, it was next to the old farm house , it is all gone now. I took a few flying lessons from him, seems like his first name was Morris, I have seen a Morris Turner in the local paper from time to time , I have often wondered if it might be the same man. For a short period of time there was also a small airfield out on Carr Hill Rd., Just south of old State Rd. 46 on the east side of Carr Hill Rd.

I belonged to the Girl's Club and we met in a two story building between the Crump theater and the Jive Kennel. Someone asked if the girls' club met in the Jive Kennel building and the answer is no. As I remember it, the Jive Kennel was just a one story building right on the corner of Franklin and Third Street. I have no idea if the building that is there now is the original one or not, but where the old girls' club would've been was in the lot between the Kennel and the Crump. Ricky or someone made a comment about the empty lot and that is where the girls' club would've been. Our activities took place upstairs as I recall a long wooden staircase that we had to climb to reach our room. I took tap dancing and also a makeup/charm class and it all happened upstairs. Never was in the Jive Kennel but often looked inside, longingly, at all the dancing and fun that seemed to go on inside. My parents were very strict and I guess they didn't feel there was enough adult supervision or something because I was forbidden to even walk inside the door.
Sorry I am not able to confirm that the building that is now on that site, at the corner of Franklin and 3rd street is the original building, but my guess is that it is not. The building that housed the girls' club I believe was a wooden building but my recollection of that may be incorrect. It just seems to me that it was a rather rickety old building. Also the Boys' Club, where the Visitor's Center now is was a frame building as I recall.

Babs, to my knowledge the Jive Kennel building is the original building, it has just been remodeled a few times. The last time that it was remodeled there was some added on the back of the building. William Conner an attorney has had the back half of the building for several years. There was a fire in the building next to it , that is now the open space, the fire I believe was about 1979.

Thanks George, since I have not always lived here, I wasn't sure. Yes, Mr. Conner and it used to be Mr. Chalk Walker( before his death) had their law offices there; didn't realize the building had never been demolished and rebuilt. So the Jive Kennel is as it always was with some remodeling then? Interesting.

Guess I might as well put in my two cents worth about the south block between Washington and Franklin. I don't think the original building for the Jive Kennel has ever been demolished. I think it has just been added on to, remodeled and part down but the original structure was pretty much one building if I remember correctly. I know W C S I was upstairs in one of the buildings between the jive kennel and the Crump.
Babs when I first started at the Girls Club it was upstairs at Lincoln School.
You people were talking about an airport on State and Gladstone. It was a Texaco station and it carried airplane fuel. The station belonged to Elmer Strietlemeir(?) He was my first husband's (Bob) uncle. He lived across Gladstone in the little white house that used to be there. When he sold the ground, he moved the gas station across Gladstone next to his house.
Just a memory that just slipped in, that is where the State Police stopped the traffic when the pipeline in Redington blew.

Speaking of the Jive Kennel and that building in particular, did you see where the attorney, Mr. Wm Conner passed away suddenly over the weekend. He was just 62 years old. It is his office that is housed in the rear of the old Jive Kennel building.
When I belong to the Girls Club, Margie, I would've been in high school so I suppose the meeting place had been moved from the Lincoln School. I was never much of a "joiner" when it came to going to clubs, etc. except the skating rink, oh how I loved that.

Great timeline, Ricky, for FFY and clarifies and verifies a good many questions that we have had. Thanks for sharing. Altho' noted a number of names that literally jumped off the page to stare me in the face-----------for me, I found this date of particular interest: 1948 Youth Camp dedicates Joan Spies memorial. Joan Spies was the only child of Florence and Ed Spies. Altho' she was older than me by quite a bit------her folks and mine were best friends. Her dad was in Lions with mine, and her mom in the same Home Ec club with my mom. Many were the 'blue gill fish frys' that I can remember going to in their home. As I recall, and some can be verified in the 1943 Log, and I suppose just by chance there is a notation in the Log, one that confirmed my memories, and I discovered it the other day in a search I did for Joan------------ www.historiccolumbusindiana.org/yearbooks/1943/45.htmI believe that after graduation from high school, Joan 'ran/managed' the record department at Westermeir's Hardware store. I know that she and her dad amassed quite a collection of records, sharing a love of music. As noted in the Log-----Joan was killed in a plane crash in Franklin. Joan was perhaps taking flying lessons and on, I believe, Easter Sunday, (there might be some question as to the date---either 1947 or 1948) she and her flight instructor/friend flew to Coatesville to survey the recent damage from a tornado a couple of days prior. It was during this trip that their plane crashed and she was killed. As a young girl, I can so recall the impact that Joan's untimely death had on her parents and friends. I found it most consoling to know that a memorial in her honor exists at the Youth Camp. A fact I did not recall. Am wondering outloud, if the local Lion's Club had anything to do with getting this memorial started, as her dad was active in that organization. Just a little insight to a name of the past. Nanc Another thought----Should perhaps insert this thought here as the Easter holidays approach: It was when this event (crash killing Joan Spies) occurred that I can remember my parents discussing tornados at length. My mom being superstitious 'contributed' that bad weather on Good Friday was a common occurrence with 'some religious beliefs as a part,' with mention made of the Coatesville tornado happening on Good Friday. I can't say that I am overly superstitious, but over the years I have always made observations about Good Friday weather, and indeed, it can be sunny at one moment and very threatening the next. While in Columbus, armed with a long list of items to 'research' in the library's newspaper archives------can expand just a bit on the passing of Joan Spies. The plane crash was on Sunday, March 29 1948. According to the paper on Monday, Joan suffered a concussion and a broken leg. George was correct that the plane, piloted by Dana White, cut through some power lines near the Bargerville airport west of Franklin. Apparently, this was the third similar crash in recent months at this airport. The Republic reported on March 30, 1948, that this accident was fatal to Joan and suggested that it was due to internal injuries. The other information that I posted about her working at Westermeir's in the record department was correct. This March 30th article goes on to say that Joan was a counselor for the Girls Club seasons at the Youth Camp during the summers of 1946 and 1947. Additionally, she had been in charge of the Girls Club swimming program at the high school pool. She was a former member of the Girls Club and was known to her friends as 'Bugs.' Active in dramatics, on that fateful Easter Sunday, prior to the plane flight, Joan had participated in an Easter broadcast given by the Vesper Players over radio station WCSI-FM. Yes, there was a tornado in Coatesville on Good Friday, but nowhere can I confirm that was 'a destination' on this flight, altho' that is 'the story' that I recall. All to verify yet another 'story.' Within the boxes of saved treasures one comes across some 'unidentified items,' well, 'unidentified as to why the photo was within, and saved.' The one I am sharing falls into that category---------I could identify one person in the photo, as well as putting a 'connect' to the Lions Club. BUT, the why and where was a mystery..............and never shared..........................! Perhaps, just maybe, as I honestly canNOT confirm, but bells went off in my head as I 'wrapped up' my information about Joan Spies. This is a 'possible explanation.' Is this a cabin out at the Youth Camp, perhaps maintained by the Lions Club in memory of Joan Spies? Her dad, Ed Spies, is the one standing by the Lions Club sign. I guess I post this photo as an example of trying to figure out the past, in an attempt to make heads or tails out of what you do know, and perhaps come up with the whole story. Don't know IF this is the rest of the story..........................but, perhaps this will trigger someone's memories and it will all 'fit.' Nanc
