I was told as a little girl in the 1960's that there was a former restaurant behind the house of 2417 Gilmore Street. It's now being used as a shed, or something. It was (IS) BEHIND the house, one is a garage and the other one is a larger building. There is a house, a garage and a third buidling on that property BEHIND the house. The building that is NOT the garage was a restaurant I was told. I think that address is 2417 Gilmore. it's beside the 2403 Gilmore street house. The building would sit on the side of the alley. But I was once told that it was a restaurant. The building is on the left as you come from 25th street It's the second on the left (a white house), right before you come to a limestone house on a double lot that has a chainlink fence all the way around it. By the way, I'm also interested in the house on the double lot, 2403 Gilmore I believe. Why is that the only house on the block with a double lot? Also across the street there is a tiny house that sits way off of the street. I was told that was once a mechanic shop. In the back of it as I remember was not a yard, but it was lined in brick and had a barbecue and the back yard was chain link and wooden fence. I hope you can help me with my questions. Thank you!

Hello Lyn and welcome to the boards. We are always glad to see new membership write on the boards and converse with others about Columbus history.
I have gone to the google maps and pictures of your 2417 Gilmore Street question. As I can see across the street was the East end of Columbus North High School. As I traveled South down Gilmore I could not find any structure that wasn't a house, or garage. I don't recall any restaurants in that area from 1956 through the early 1960s; when I went to that high school . However, there were others near the old Diary Queen and next to the Queen.
Now, there are others that write on the boards and comment; with keen history minds like Richard, Gregg, David, George, Nanc and others that might remember that area too.

Lyn.....What you or someone remembers as a restaurant was a very small convenience store that sold candy bars, baseball cards, ect. I attended 7th and 8th grades at the then 25th St school (now Columbus North) and I also lived on Gilmore St. I would either walk or ride my bike to and from school and many times after school on my way home I would stop at this store for a snack. It was as you described behind a house and it actually faced as I recall onto a cross street to Gilmore. Either 24th or maybe 23rd. I do not remember it as ever being a restaurant.

LYN I THINK DOUGEMIG MADE A COMMENT ABOUT THE STORE ON GILMORE YOU ALSO MADE MENTION OF 2327 CALIFORNIA ST THAT WAS THE ADDRESS OF MY BABY SITTER MRS BILL HART IN 1947 MR HART WAS AN ALLSTATE INSURANCE SALESMAN IN SEARS THEY LATER MOVED TO 1728 CALIFORNIA ST I THINK THE HAD AT LEAST ONE BOY WHO WOULD BE IN HIS EARLY 60S THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP IF ANYONE KNOWS THEM DAVE STEENBARGER AND JOE BOVA LIVED A DOOR OR TWO FROM THIS HOUSE AND SUBLETTE FAMILYS LIVED AROUND THERE THEIR DESCENDENTS MAY ALSO HELP
IM MAY BE OFF BUT THE WAS A STORE BETWEEN NEWTON AND GILMORE BUT I THINK THAT WAS 21ST I CHECKED THE 53 DIRECTORY THAT WAS SCHWARTZKOPF MARKET THIS IS THE GILMORE ADDRESSES BELOW I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH JERRY CALVIN IF HE IS STILL AROUND HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP
2403 Bert Calvin 2404 J. Earl Finkel 2410 Thomas I. Durbin Durbin’s TV Aerial Service rear Acme Duplicating Service 2417 Wilbur N. Pancake 2436 Maurice H. Gore
RICHARD GAVE SOME ADDITIONAL INFO
I have an advantage that you don't in that I also have the name listing. As you said, the Edward G. Schwartzkopf Grocery was at 1325 which is between Newton and Gilmore on 21st street. The 1325 'odd number' would make the location on the south side of 21st. Going to the name listing, I find Edward G.and Lottie E. Grocery at 1325 21st street and the home of Edward G. and Lottie E. Schwartzkopf at 2034 Gilmore. 2034 'even number' is on the west side of the street. If you look at your 53 street list, but look down between 20th and 21st and you'll see that Mr. and Mrs. Schwartzkopf is the last house on the west side of Gilmore. I drove up there this evening and If you look you see that 24th doesn't run between Newton and Gilmore. 23rd only runs to the west from Gilmore. That is a 'T" intersection, not a cross street.

I'm looking for information on the 2403 Gilmore street house, and the one to the left, and right of it and some of the neighbors nearby. Thank you. (and old black and white pictures of them too)

Lyn,
The small house across from 2403 Gilmore was the home of Tomas Durbin, a city firefighter.
The small house was built for a garage and was to be used as a temporary house until Mr. Durbin could build a house on the front-of the lot, which never did happen he just kept improving the garage, which the family lived in for several years.
There was a small building in the back that Mrs. Durbin used as a printing shop.

Lyn, you may want to call the library and ask if they can assist you in your requests. They may be able to help in some manner. The picture part may be somewhat more of a challenge. Were any of those houses put up for sale during the time period you want? If so, there may be picture ads in the old Evening Republican, but the quality probably wouldn't be that good. The library also offers many city directories which can provide a wealth of information.
Good luck.

I lived in the 2300 block of Newton from 1948 through 1958 and can't recall such a place. Then, again, that might have been on the fringes of my "territory"!
