This view of the block the new parking garage will occupy is looking to the north-north-east from Brown Street between Second and Third Streets. Seen is the new Cummins Inc., Office building, on the left and the Bartholomew County Courthouse on the right.

"Not bad for a town of 39,000 that began as three log cabins and a general store"Source: From the morning Louisville Courier Journal this day Novemeber 9, 2008.Read the article by Mr. Dennis Maurize of "The Tennessean":www.courier-journal.com/article/20081109/FEATURES05/81106004Comment: The Louisville Courier Journal has always been a friendly and reporting paper about Columbus, Indiana's events, sports and the news. There are four board members that delivered this paper over the years in Columbus. They delivered in the 1950s and they are Jack Hinkle, Doug Emig and myself (RER). I believe David Sechrest may have said at one time he delivered that paper but not sure on that. I won many trips during that two years of delivery. One was all expenses paid to Miami Florida for a whole week. That was a big event at a very young age before high school. I hope you enjoyed the above article.

Police Patch of Historical Columbus IndianaWhat a beautiful and thoughtful design for law enforcementSummary of historical patch:(1) The background is reflecting of Columbus' two suspended bridges. (2) First item in middle is the Library geometric piece. (3) The historic First Christian Church (4) The Bartholomew County Courthouse (5) This last is a reflection on two local churches; which are the St. Peter's Lutheran Church and the North Christian Church.

The following is in today’s The Republic newspaper in the Looking Back column.
From 1983
“Shorty” Prather had a short retirement, leaving Florida to return to Columbus to re-open his famous Shorty’s Restaurant at 6th and Wilson Streets. NOTE* Today Wilson Street, between Sixth and Seventh Streets, has been renamed Reeves Way.
Having just completed an election cycle, I found this interesting.
From 1958
Political parties in Bartholomew County, Indiana reported total expenditures of $30,616.96 in the November 4, general election.

In the Republic this morning there was an article announcing that Columbus once again is in the spotlight. At a meeting held in Kissimmee, Florida, our local Columbus Visitor's Center was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the United States Speciality Sports Association for "outstanding and continuous support to their program". We were the only visitor's center recognized by the USSSA this year. Columbus will also host 19 USSSA events in 2009.
Just another example of what a great place Columbus, Indiana really is. :-)
The full article is on the front section of the Sports Page, B but does not give any particular reporter credit for the article.

I am so sorry, but will have to send my regrets. Today has not been a good day for me, as cold as it is.
Please give each other a hug from me, and may I wish all of you a Blessed Christmas.

We had a wonderful get together this evening at the Rondot's residence in Timbergate. Everyone "oohed and aahed" over all of the lovely trees and the collections they have all through there home, from the lovely Christmas trees, to crystal, snowmen, the food, postcards, etc. etc. I can not begin to name all the collections these two have in their beautiful home.
Quite a few were in attendance but there were a few missing too and to those of you who couldn't come, we are sorry you missed such a delightful evening.
We are shooting for a date the later part of June for our next event but if the location is to be Donner Shelter House we can not get a firm date till after 1 January 2009, so more details on this at a later time.
Thanks to John and Marilnn Rondot for a very delightful evening and for allowing us to all troop through your home once again admiring all the lovely decorations and WOW what a spread of food! This is one talented woman when she gets in the kitchen folks! She just outdoes herself in the cooking/baking department and everything was just delicious!!!! :-)
Thats all for now and Merry Christmas to one and all.

The following is in the Looking Back feature in today’s edition of The Republic newspaper. As you know, I’ve been placing a disclaimer to my Columbus City Directory posts. After reading today’s column, I’m thinking that perhaps I should do the same when using The Republic as my source of information.
Today, the information from 1998, states that Harold Campbell announced that he will close his A and H Auto Service at Eighth and Washington Streets. The reason given is the federal regulations made removal of the old underground tanks and installation of new tanks too expensive. Also included is a photo, from The Republic Archives. The information with the picture say’s it shows Harold Callahan standing outside the A and H Auto Service!
This is from 1958: Pasquale’s Restaurant was opened at 1130 Twenty-fifth Street.
Today Tuesday, December 16, 2008, The Republic has a Correction. The paper is saying that the photo identification of Harold Campbell is incorrect

Yesterday, December 17, 2008 the schools were closed here in Columbus as well as the Senior Center. I understand as long as the schools close so does the center and schools were closed because of the layer of ice on most of the county roads. In town things were not too bad, at least in the afternoon when we ran errands. You had to be careful but the city did a fine job of making sure the intersections and main roads were deiced. The word is out that the city is going to have to cut back on a lot of our services but so far they are doing just fine.
Not many days till Christmas so Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all. Enjoy your holidays but be careful when you are out and about. :-) Lets hope 2009 will be perhaps a better year for Columbus and we won't be looking at any more disasters like this year brought to us.

December 19, 2008. Today it is in the 50's, the sun is peeking through and the wind is blowing. You would think it might be Spring! Yesterday my front porch was a solid sheet of ice that even the snow shovel would not budge it was stuck so solidly. The rain came overnight and it warmed up and now the ice is gone. This is Indiana weather folks! You never know what Mother Nature will drop on us!

A Positive Thought Repeated On One My Posts In September 2008
Reference: Re: Columbus Indiana Today « Result #4 on Sept 14, 2008, 10:18pm »
Quote: In 1934 Mr. Donald DeShane, Columbus Indiana Superintendent of Schools Said This During the Great Depression
Quote: "A man's land may be lost by foreclosure, his bonds may be defaulted, his money depreciated, his business destroyed, but if he has a well trained mind, he has a most valuable possession which can not be taken away from him, and which will enable him to survive the worst of adversities." End Quote.
Does this quote mean anything in our present 2008/2009 economy?
Even if it relates, the intelligent Columbus Indiana School Superintendent finished with a positive comment about a "trained mind;" that enables people to survive the worst of adversities.
No, matter your circumstances of today; keep a positive mind and press on because adversities will be overcome. Remember the book called the "Power of Positive Thinking." What Mr. DeShane said during the 1930s in a positive light, applies to our lives today. Some today see a possible recession which is not a depression; but what his powerful statement revealed can be applied to that circumstance also.
Columbus Indiana folks and famlies are very intelligent and will sustain themselves in a positive direction and manner.
Reference: Quote by Mr. Donald DeShane in 1934.
Book Quote: Norman Vincent Peale (May 31, 1898 – December 24, 1993
My final comment: God Bless and be positive

Did everyone read the good article about Mount Tipton in today's Republic? Most interesting indeed...and I do wonder if that iron fence is actually part of the fence that surrounded this majestic home? I was born here in Columbus but for the life of me, I do not recall this home. Yet I remember Death Valley and other things in the downtown area.
Am thinking maybe someone will post the whole article as it was quite interesting.

Hi Babs and yes I read the article and it was good. I don't believe that the fence they showed in the picture was part of the Tipton fence. Here is a partial enlarged picture of the Tipton fence. Now, it could be part of a gate system or something else but as you look at this picture it is not near what was in the paper: Fence was not as fancy as what the paper showed in design Did everyone read the good article about Mount Tipton in today's Republic? This is Tipton Knoll around 1910 and it does show a gate, but not much detail, it is kinda hard to tell if it is the one over at the old 2nd St. bridge site. As a youngster my friends and I would ride our bikes all over the down town area, " very little traffic ", and I remember Tipton Knoll well, was always told it was a Indian Mound, not true as we found out when it was leveled for the new 3rd St. bridge. Tipton Knoll was the local VFW post and we would venture up the front steps, but no further, hard to believe that 3rd St. dead ended there. And then in 1950 the Knoll came down for the new bridge, I guess you could say that was the beginning of the end for the old down town, but I guess that is progress.
