How wonderful for you to have that piece of family history and be able to share it with us!

Call the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archive and make an appointment to come dig through our files on Castalia. We have lots of old publications with photos of the property. We also have the original blueprints. 812-379-1297. We are an all-volunteer organization, so you will need to leave a message...and I'll get back to you! I'll be glad to help you find what you need!

The Columbus Indiana Architectural Archive will be part of the new Mill Race Center dedication on April 17th. We will be hosting our second "town talk". The public is invited to come to the dedication and hear architects William Rawn and Doug Johnston for that occasion, and the town talk portion of the event will begin at approximately 4:30. William Rawn & Associates are located in Boston. They also did Fire Station #6 for us here in Columbus. Mill Race Center was a departure from their usual clients...which were many college campus related buildings. The Mill Race project brought them new challenges in working with the senior population! Join us on April 17th! You will LOVE the building, and you will be able to ask questions of the architects during the CIAA sponsored "town talk".

Can't find a place to put this, so I'm putting it here. It will be "new" history for downtown. Take a look at today's Republic newspaper. There are several articles about the new Commons, and Chaos I. They visited me at the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archive last week for about 90 minutes. That's where the photographer got many of the photos, and the reporter got a lot of info.

I recently did a Saturday tour, and the bus driver, Ted, said he remembers when the lagoons were dug. I was surpirsed, but perhaps you could get more info from him.

Good question! I can't remember what Harry's article concluded.

On the current tour route, we pass by old Station 2 on Central Avenue, Station 1, and IF we are ahead of schedule on the weekends, we also go past the new Station 2. I would really like to see us go back to an older version of the tour and get Station 4, and possibly Station 3, back on the route.

Wow! Pretty soon, you guys will have ALL the former Columbus fire trucks rounded up! It is so fun to mention the two that are downtown in station #1 when we do tours for the city.

That is the Irwin home.......now the Inn at Irwin Gardens. This photo was recently on Ebay for sale, and dated 1898. That is 5th Street you see runnning past the front. If you compare this photo with a more recent one, you can see the entrance is pretty much the same. Both those porches have since been removed, and the roofline greatly changed over the decades. It is also prior to the gardens being put in. All that being said...We know that is has NOT been razed! I Remember This Long Ago 1898 House Do You?(1) Who Originally lived in the home? (2) Who was the last person or family to live in it before razing? (3) Where was it located? Comment: I found this picture in my files and wasn't sure if it was posted before.

Here is a labeled postcard of the Irwin home showing many of the similarities of the old photo. Hope this works! Every time I go in to load another photo, they've changed the program!

Did anyone see in the paper Saturday that the Gent house is up for sale? That's the lovely brick home on Franklin Street with the stained glass, oval windows, rope design around the front doors, etc., etc., etc. I'm calling it the Gent house because it was built for the owner of the Gent Milling Company. (I hope I have that correct!)

Searching for some documents last week for a patron in the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archive (CIAA), I found that we have blueprints for the Mode Theater dating to 1936! Haven't had time to look at them yet, but I would imagine it will be interesting.
If you ever want to visit the Archive to look for any buildings in particular, please let me know.

Dug out the photo of the bridge from the north end of 31 so you could compare.

Here's the bridge on the south end of 31. As of tonight, it's still standing. It does match the one that was on the other end of 31.

Took photos today of the old metal bridge at 31 and 10th/Taylor Road. It is slated for demo on September 27th/28th. I just compared my photos of that bridge and the one that was replaced on the OTHER end of 31 a couple years ago. They appear to be exactly the same. I'll try to post photos.

FYI: I'm doing a PIE class on Monday, September 20th, 2010, about the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archive. It will be held in the Red Room at the library, and then move to the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archive for a little open house. If you are not familiar with us as an organization, I'd love for you to come! Our mission is to collect, conserve, and preserve everything that has to do with the built environment of Columbus, Bartholomew County, including architecture, landscape, and art.
The "class" requires you to pre-register at the PIE office and the cost is $5...of which none goes to me or the Archive.
The time will be 7:00 p.m.
Hope to see some of you there!

Yes. The courthouse roof is barely visible within that jumble of rooflines. The photo is indeed looking south, as you can see the MODE theater signage on the left hand side......those verticle, art deco circles. Another sign I noticed when I turned the photo into a negative.........just around the corner and next to the shoe store is another verticle sign that says "Clothing".
