;D
Great news!
I heard from the people at the Indiana Historic Bureau last week! The Orinoco historical marker is set to be shipped on or before April 6th!
The break-away pole device is to be hand delivered the end of March from a company in Ohio.
Installation of the pole and device will have to be done and then........we can have the dedication of the marker at the property site at 17th and Orinoco!

George,
Do you HAVE that GAR book so I could copy the page? or is it something that I would find at local Historical Society?
Thanks, Rhonda

You are correct, and I think that's what I stated.........radio cabinets for Capehart.
I have drawings by one of the Orinoco designers, of several "styles" of radio cabinets they did for Capehart.

The Orinoco Furniture Company was incorporated on April 19, 1890. The final sale of the building was on August 27, 1940, at which time, all remaining materials, patterns, machinery, and the building, were sold at auction.

If any of you know of anyone who would be interested in buying an Orinoco dining room suite, let me know. A friend in Chicago has just purchased a second suite and will be selling one suite soon. I can hook you up! Also.........Concerning my historical marker.........Still waiting on approval from the city engineer. I'm trying to work with INDOT through the state historical people. It's very frustrating.

Update on the historical marker:
I am now waiting on the city engineer to get info from the city attorney. This is turning out to be more of a problem than I ever dreamed....just getting all parties to agree on a spot to poke this marker into the ground!
Once I have a date set, I'll post here. There will likely be an announcement in the local paper, too.

If you know anyone who is interested in owning some Orinoco furniture, I currently have two contacts with dining room suites for sale. One is in Battle Creek, Michigan. The other is in Chicago.
Also..........Minor set-backs with the historical marker. My April 19th goal will not be realized. The current building owner and I had a couple spots picked out to locate the marker. City engineers and current building tenants can't agree with us. Things are still up in the air. UGH!

The marker paperwork has been sent in. The historical marker is now being ordered for manufacture. We are on target for the installation to be in mid-April. I must now meet with the owner of the building to discuss placement of the in-ground post. May even have to talk with the city engineers.......if placement falls into city right-of-way.
When I originally began this process, I never imagined how much I'd learn!

Great news! Last Monday, I received word that a local foundation will fund the cost of "my" historical marker for the Orinoco Furniture Company! Once the check is delivered to the guys at the State Historical Bureau, things should proceed more quickly!

On December 2nd, the Indiana State marker Advisory Committee "unanimously and enthusiastically" recommended my application for a state historical marker for the Orinoco Furniture Company. It will receive final approval on December 16th from the Indiana Library and Historical Board. A tentative date for installation has been set for April 19th, 2006. This will be 116 years, to the day, of the company being established. It is also my birthday. Stay tuned for more updates!

Ricky,
The final sale of the Orinoco business was in 1940.
Bill,
There was indeed an Orinoco Hotel/boarding house just south of the Orinoco factory. Old city directories indicate this.

I was recently able to obtain a complete listing of every item that was appraised and auctioned at the final closing sale of the Orinoco Furniture Company. The list of equipment, wood, fabrics, tools, etc., is 68 pages long! The appraisal was done building by building and floor by floor within each building. Most all the buildings are still standing and being used now for other businesses. On November 11th, I walked completely around the property with a Sanborn fire map of 1927, and photographed the exterior of all the buildings.

I contacted the guys at the state who are working on "my" historical marker, to see where we stand in the process. It seems they are currently working on text for the marker. It will be sent before the marker advisory committee on December 2nd. If text is approved, it will then come to me for approval. Seems to be a l--o--n--g process. Or am I just impatient?

I'll be doing my program about the Orinoco Furniture Company and Lincoln Chair Company again on December 12th for a group of ladies from First Methodist Church.
If you know a group or organization that would be interested in hearing the history of the two companies, give me a shout!

Just wanted to let people know that I have been doing programs about the Orinoco Furniture Company and Lincoln Chair Company. I have presented the program to several local antique clubs,, and other organizations here in Columbus and last week I actually went to Indianapolis and did my presentation at two different locations on the same day for the "Oasis" organization. If you have a club or organization that might be interested in hearing the history of the two companies, let me know! I LOVE telling people about the wonderful furniture heritage that Columbus...and my family...have!

The painting of Tommy Warner (Santa), in City Hall, was done by a friend of mine. His name is David Williams. If you have seen the painting, you noticed that Tommy was not wearing the Santa suit. There was some controversy about this when David was submitting his early sketches. The Santa suit was draped over the back of the sleigh in the finished painting. Also....I don't think the children are Tommy's grandchildren. I'll try to find out for certain. There is also a wonderful little story about the bird being held in the hand of one of the children. It is actually a personal connection to David and a family tradition from his mother.
