ALTHOUGH I LIKE TO SEE MY NAME IN PRINT THE HINKLE FIELDHOUSE WASN'T NAMED HINKLE UNTIL 1966 UP UNTIL THEN IT WAS BUTLER FIELDHOUSE. The Columbus Bull Dog Basketball team of 1937-38 was the very first team in the history of Columbus High School basketball to reach the the semi-finals and play at Hinkle Fieldhouse. They were beaten by the South Side Of Ft. Wayne by only 6 points in the first game. The Varsity team consisted of Jim McKinney, John Boyd, Bill Hayworth, Bud Prewitt, Eugene Coleman, Harold Western, Chester Brown, Maurice Jordan, Clark Townsend, Frank Johns, Don Shumaker, and Howard Tomlinson. The coach was George H. Boots. see the 1938 CHS Yearbook on the website for more information...

A Big First For Columbus High School (CHS) History (1937-1938 Team)Attention: This was 70 years ago I have researched what I wrote before and I called it wrong. The 1954 team was the 2nd Team to reach the Semi-State in basketball. The 1937-1938 team was the first to reach Hinkle Field House (now called Butler Field House). The 3rd Team to reach the Semi-State was 1955. The Bulldogs reached the semi-state two years in a row and that was 1954 and 1955. I made an error on the research but this puts it in the right light for history. No sense in posting a picture when you can go here:www.historiccolumbusindiana.org/yearbooks/1938/91.htm CHS Coach George H. Boots (First Coach To Reach Indiana Semi-Finals) Team Names Per David Sechrest: The Varsity team consisted of Jim McKinney, John Boyd, Bill Hayworth, Bud Prewitt, Eugene Coleman, Harold Western, Chester Brown, Maurice Jordan, Clark Townsend, Frank Johns, Don Shumaker, and Howard Tomlinson. Comment: Only my view......I recognize one name and that is Bud Prewitt. If I am right he became a top manager on the floor at Cummins Engine Company. My father talked about how great Bud Prewitt was in management. The Team Picture & Info: First Team Historical Semi-State Columbus HighThe Varsity team consisted of Jim McKinney, John Boyd, Bill Hayworth, Bud Prewitt, Eugene Coleman, Harold Western, Chester Brown, Maurice Jordan, Clark Townsend, Frank Johns, Don Shumaker, and Howard Tomlinson. Questions Unknown: Was Don Shumaker the basketball players father named Jay Shumaker in 1959 and 1960? (If I am recalling properly here Jay's father was Donald...maybe?) Update: No Jay's Dad was Clarence (Bud) and this Don Shumaker was "bud's" first cousin. Also, Bill Hayworth was my classmate's father and her name was Patty Hayworth. Also, was Maurice Jordan a Columbus Fire Chief at one time? Further, was Jim McKinney the father of the Sheriff in Columbus many years later? I think this Bud Prewitt was in management at Cummins Engine Company for many years. Source & A Thank You Again: 1938 Columbus High School Log. Thanks to David Sechrest for finding this information in research of the old days. Heck, it was only around 70 years ago.

The Columbus Bull Dog Basketball Team of 1967-68 also made it to the semi-state. The Dogs took the Conference Title that year, and set records in their 18-2 season. They broke 100 on five separate occaions, and scored 123 points in their first game of the year, breaking the old record of 117 set by the undefeated state finalist team of 1964. The 1967-68 Dogs averaged 94.05 points a game (no--that's not a typo).
Tom Arnholt set an individual high by scoring 50 points against Anderson. He was also the leading scorer averaging 25.6 points a game. Steve Welmer and Mike Vincent were both rebounding leaders. Mike Vincent led the Dogs from the field with 55% accuracy. Lanham and Welmer were at 54% and 52% respectively.
The Bull Dog Varsity were: Randy Allman, Joe Brooks, Loran Roberts, Tony Lanham, Mike Vincent, Steve Welmer, Mike Cota, Melbert Good, Randy Lykins, Tom Arnholt, Kirk Detty, Dave Battleson, Lynn Montgomery, and Mike Peters.
Coach: Bill Stearman
The Dogs were beaten by Shortridge in the Semi-State Game, 88-77.

This Is A Multiple History Overview of CHS Basketball Shoes Worn Throughout Over 40 Years at CHS This is also a tribute again to Charles "Chuck" Taylor a former Captain of the 1917 CHS basketball team "Father of the Basketball Clinic"Overview: The famous national basketball demonstrator and canvas tennis shoe designer was the captain of the team and third leading scorer. Many players wore knee pads up to the year 1950 because the shoe grip wasn't the best. Chuck played many games in the old 5th Street City Hall second floor on rough flooring so to speak. Without knee pads many floor burns in those days kept the knees scared up. Chuck knowing the problems with early shoes and floor burn problems improved the shoe design. His shoes have sold millions of pairs and still selling today. Application of Chuck's Shoes at CHS: My research in the Logs of CHS from around 1926 through year 1961 shows a distinct wearing of "Chuck Taylor All-star" tennis shoes in basketball and other sports. The actual date of inception and closing of the wearing of his designed shoes could not be determined. Below I will present CHS ladies and men's teams wearing his designed shoes after "Chuck" departed CHS. I placed a year date on each picture but not the players names. Chuck's Side Patches: Early Shoe & Patch Later PatchCHS Players Wearing Chuck Taylor Shoes By Dates: 1926 1926 1929 1934 1938 1940 1942 1943 1944 1951 1952 1959 1960 1961 Final Comments: Chuck toured the world promoting his "Chuck Taylor All-Star" shoes. He visited colleges nationwide to demonstrate trick plays and his shoe's abilities. Chuck's time was before the Columbus Pearl Street Gym, but what a gift he gave to the nation on quality tennis shoes that gripped and helped do away with knee pads. Chuck added the circle pad on the ankle areas to help support the ankle more during stress. The circle with his name insured the canvas didn't stretch much around the ankle during extreme movements. Chuck Taylor tennis shoes of multiple colors are still worn today worldwide this year of 2008. Sources: Picture of Chuck Taylor from the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and various Logs

If Chuck Taylor Could See His Shoes TodayColumbus born and educated Chuck Taylor would probably be excited about how his tennis shoes came from basic black, brown and white to now all colors, multi-colors and even plaid. Below is a rake of Converse Chuck Taylor All-star tennis shoes of today. I have been told by many and read they a very popular today with young and old. Enjoy th rake of shoe review:

While doing work on the Fehring Carriage Co., I ran across this item that Joy Deckard snapped at our 3rd Historic Columbus Day Celebration at Donner. I put this in the Fehring Carriage Folder and really thought it should be copied somewhere within the CHS sports section. I know it's baseball, and this is a basketball thread, but Dutch did play basketball for the Bull Dogs in 1929. I'm sure that Dutch played other sports as well. William P. (Dutch) Fehring was the grandson of T. A. Fehring and the son of Lynn and Ivy Thompson Fehring. From wikipedia: Born in Columbus, Indiana, Fehring attended Purdue University, where he starred in football, basketball, and baseball, one of only two Purdue athletes to letter nine times. Fehring helped the Boilermakers win two Big Ten titles in football and a national championship in basketball in 1932, where he was the traveling roommate of John Wooden. Fehring was inducted into the inaugural class of the Purdue University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. After graduating from Purdue, Fehring chose to play his favorite sport, baseball, where he excelled as a catcher. He was signed by the Chicago White Sox, and in his only Major League appearance on July 25, 1934, Fehrig tagged out Lou Gehrig at the plate as Gehrig was attempting an inside-the-park home run. Fehrig's tag, however, gave Gehrig a triple, and with his other hits on the day, it was the first time Gehrig ever hit for the cycle. After his baseball career ended, Fehring returned to Purdue and became their head baseball coach and assistant football coach from 1936 to 1942. After serving in World War II, Fehring was an assistant football coach for two years at Oklahoma and for one year at UCLA, where he recommended his college friend John Wooden for the head basketball coaching vacancy. In 1949, Fehring was hired as an assistant baseball and football coach at Stanford. He took over as head baseball coach in 1956, and coached for 11 years, culminating in a College World Series semifinals appearance in 1967. Along with his football coaching role in the 1952 Rose Bowl, Fehring has the unique distinction as a coach in both a College World Series and a Rose Bowl. Fehring retired as head baseball coach in 1967, but remained at Stanford as director of intramurals and club sports until 1977. Fehring died in Stanford, California in 2006 at the age of 93. Fehring is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame, the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, the Purdue University Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame.

Picture updated: Number 11, the first guy on bottom row is unknown at this time. Two former Bulldogs have been feeding me the names that I can't remember. They are still trying to figure out the unknown guy, but to no avail at this time. Number 12 is Don Adams the previous unknown. Go to the first post because it was updated with the most current identifications.
By The Way: 7 of these guys went on to play with the Bulldogs varsity team. The year of the picture is when the Bulldogs went to the Semi-State.

The Father Of CHS Sports & The First & Last Bulldogs Basketball Coaches At The Pearl Street Gym Busenburg Dobbins Stearman Brief: CHS did not have a basketball gymnasium until 1924 on Peal Street. In fact there was no basketball team to speak of until Mr. F. L. Busenburg arrived in Columbus. Mr. Busenburg formed several athletic teams well before the construction of the "ole long gone Pearl Street Gym. Those teams he guided, played on the second floor of the old still standing City Hall on 5th Street. The first athletic director was Coach F. L. Busenburg. Coach Busenburg came to Columbus High School (CHS) October 15, 1914. He was a mathematics teacher and a graduate of Indiana University. Then finally during 1923 and completed in 1924 the Pearl Street Gym was operational. The first basketball coach in that facility was William Dobbins during the opening, however he started coaching the Bulldogs in 1922, after Mr. Busenburg assigned him the job. The last CHS Bulldog coach to guide the teams in the Pearl Street Gym was William (Bill) Stearman until 1954. Then the Dogs moved to the present Gym on Home Street at North Columbus High School. Comment About Busenburg: Quote: The Log staff of 1916 said this about Coach Busenburg. "He discovered not even the most advanced minute sign of athletics in the school. He found croquet, chess and horseshoe were seldom indulged in by students, and such sports as baseball, basketball, and track were unheard of and unseen."Source of picture: Indiana University Library
