I have moved the Columbus High School Message Board. You will now find it under the Historic Columbus Indiana Message Board News & How-To's category.
It was really out of place way down at the bottom of the main message board page.
I would really appreciate some input as to how to set up the High School Message Board better than what it is.
Anybody have any suggestions???

I have added a new Thread: Columbus Indiana Newspapers. This is a look at early newspapers that sprung up in Columbus in the 1800's.

Since I created the Columbus High School Sports Thread, I moved some of the posts from the Columbus High School Message Board Thread.

It is hard to believe that this Historic Columbus Indiana Message Board is almost 3 years old! After 2 previous attempts at setting up a message board, it appears that this one is really going great.
What amazes me more is the activity and the wonderful memories left by everyone in that period of time.
There is an absolute wealth of information buried within this Message Board, and I suggest if you have problems finding a particular subject, please try the Search feature. You will find the Search icon in the box at the top of the page. After clicking on it, type in what you wish to search for, then scroll down and select the number of days you wish the search engine to look at.
For example, when Bob (RER) and others were searching for info about the rolling bulldog, Margo had posted info about Gordon Huckaby and the rolling bulldog one year prior!
A BIG thank you to those of you who have had fun here, leaving your own stories about the Columbus you remember. I think I speak for all of us when I say it's been a blast making new friends, and in some cases, renewing friendships with old friends.
I hope that more will contribute to this ongoing project of recording Columbus history!

David, I think I speak for a lot of people who have enjoyed this message board due to YOUR EFFORTS !! Without you, it would never have come into existence. I don't have as much time on the computer as I would like to reference all the wonderful memories and messages. So, I always scroll to the bottom of the Home page, and click on last 50 messages. It speeds up my time and allows me to read the memories I 'm interested in, firsdt , and if I have time later I can go back and read all of them. Thanks so much for creating this link. I wish more of my other web sites would include it in theirs. . Did not get a chance to say " HAPPY BIRTHDAY " and hope yours was enjoyable . Grandma Margo

David, You mentioned something I have thought about many times. There is a great deal of long ago forgotten memories that have surfaced on this board. I sure hope you back up this thing . This board is not only important to us and our families and friends, but also to the whole of Columbus. It would certainly be an interesting project for someone with experience in that sort of thing, to glean this whole thing for a book. or at least make a hard copy of it for future generations.
from me too HAPPY BIRTHDAY a little late
Margie

Earlier, there was some discussion as to whether or not a new CEREALINE folder should be set up.
My answer is as follows: When I reorganized the Message Board, it was with the intent that one would be able to post items in a specific topic folder, and more importantly, that one would be able to locate items of interest fairly easy.
My original thought was that I would set up topics like Life In Columbus Indiana In The 1880's as a place where we could discuss the hardships, joys, and daily routines of life in and around Columbus Indiana in those days. Basically, what it was like to live back then. That is what it says under the main title. And, this is the whole purpose for the entire "Life In Columbus Indiana Throughout the Decades" category.
Secondly, I set up the Manufacturing and Business topics. Manufacturers were any companies that made products (this also includes Industry). Businesses were the ones who sold the manufactured goods to the community. So, for example, H. C. Whitmer. They were both. But, in order for them to sell their product, they had to make it, so in all actuality, H. C. Whitmer would be a Manufacturer first, distributor second.
Before I go any further, I want to pose a question: if you just stumbled upon this message board and wanted to find out something about Cerealine, where would you look first? Under Columbus Manufacturers or Life In Columbus Indiana in the 1880's? It's not listed in the Manufacturer's section, nor is it in the Business section. Since there is no topic heading for Cerealine in the 1880's section, what now?
In order for people to find things easier, it would be best to create a new CEREALINE topic under manufacturing. That way, anyone coming to this website for the first time could find it much easier.
Now, this isn't a battle about someone being right and someone being wrong. This is the 3rd Message Board I've attempted to offer. All of my offerings have been done by trial and error, with many many errors. This is simply something we must think about and address as we go along. After all, this message board isn't just for the people who frequent it daily or weekly. Most importantly, it's for those who have never been here before...
Now, I will let you decide: should there be a Cerealine folder?

Hi David:
Well, when I started posting things about Cerealine it was a challenge to find much about the place. As I kept researching many of the the 15 posts became repetitious somewhat. But, each time a bit of new information was inserted to add to the first comments.
I feel that some of my original posts can be deleted or short comments consolidated into my most current postings. I am just guessing that maybe 5 or so can be canned.
As you know it is time consuming to research and most of all the complexity of posting pictures etc. with postings is cumbersome and time consuming at the least. I have spent hours trying to post some things and kept changing them to make sure I was communicating.
When I started there wasn't a place as you know to place Cerealine in any logical current post subject, and maybe I should have asked for a Cerealine home. I recently spent money for the Cerealine trade card so all could be aware of those cards and be able to see some of their past adventures in advertising and cookbooks. The card is not being donated, it seems no one had any interest in the card, so in the future I will hold it until I find a home to protect it.
As far as establishing a Cerealine Section that is fine. Keep in mind I would like to re-post all after analysis and review of my posts. I think (as I said) I can consolidate, merge and delete a few of those posts and save space. I would re-post from the rear and come forward to the current etc.
Re-posting may take a few days because there will be a lot of time required to do them exactly like they are now, without disturbing the quality and the statements. So, if you want to that is it up to you, and "good ole" Richard.
Have a good one !

It just seems, (maybe?), that by creating a Cerealine folder in the manufacturing section, people would be better able to locate the info.
Anyway, if that is the decision that is reached, you can decide how best to handle the move of your posts.
Hope you are doing ok!

OK, after a great deal of thought, discussion, and conversation, I created a Cerealine Thread in the Industry: A History Lesson In Columbus Manufacturing category.

Ref David's Quote:
Cerealine Manufacturing Company Has Moved
I hope I didn't disrupt the pages today. I had to re-post all of Cerealine information from "1800's Life In Columbus & Bartholomew County," because of the new home of Cerealine Manufacturing within the Industry Section pages. I have deleted from the "1800's Life In Columbus & Bartholomew County," same posts, and comments that aren't pertinent to the history flow of that once great and interesting company of Columbus Indiana.

As you have noticed, I've been doing some work to the main page of the message board.
The Decades boards (Columbus Indiana Throughout The Decades) have been compiled within the main board.
The Chat Room and Contest Categories have been moved to the bottom of the page.
More changes are in store, which hopefully will be for the best!

If you have made posts in the following threads, I would appreciate it if you could move these items out.
Log Ads From The 1970's, 1960's, 1950's, 1940's, 1930's, 1920's
If you are the owner of any of these posts, please move them to a thread that best corresponds with the ad and/or your comment.
Any questions, let me know! Thanks!

Maintaining both the Message Board and the Historic Columbus Indiana website is getting to the point where it is too much for me to handle. I am thankful that I have Richard to help me with the message board and I appreciate all he does to keep things going here.
I just received 3 yearbooks from Jerry Coomer: 1946, 1947, and 1936 to scan and record the names of the classmates. I'm also preparing other articles for the website, and I just can't keep on top of both the website and message board.
If I disappear from here for weeks at a time, there is reason for the disappearance.
I so much appreciate all you folks and all the wonderful posts, pictures, and discussions you've added to the board.
I'm sure Richard will agree with me when I say that the Message Board is a "full-time" job all by itself, and I so much appreciate Richard and all the work he has done here.
Kudo's to everyone here!!!

What I tried to say early this morning and didn't do a very good job of it was this:
If you have made posts in the following threads, I would appreciate it if you could move these items out.
Log Ads From The 1970's, 1960's, 1950's, 1940's, 1930's, 1920's
The Log Ad threads are located in the "Columbus Indiana Broken Down By Decade" board.
If you are the owner of any of these posts, please move them to a thread that best corresponds with the ad and/or your comment.
Sorry about the confusion!

Ref:
I hope I didn't disrupt the pages today, but David Sechrest has asked all posters to relocate (re-post) many items into proper locations, and new sites he has developed. By doing this it will be much easier to locate items of special interest in the future. I won't be the only person re-posting over the next few days. Sorry, but it had to be done.

Wow...what a year 2007 has been. I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like this may have been the busiest year for Columbus Indiana ever, as far as our ever changing look. The old Central School was replaced with a newer one...the new Hotel Indigo on the corner of 5th and Lindsey...a new parking garage between 4th and 5th on Jackson, and plans for the Commons to be demolished with a new one (plus a hotel) put in its place. There has been so much construction on SR46 coming into town from Nashville that its hard to keep track of the businesses without a business scorecard.
We lost the old McDonalds on National Road, but don't fret Big Mac Lovers, for a new McDonalds replaced it (in 3 months no less).
Smaller changes? Cummins Bookstore, a mainstay in downtown Columbus Indiana since 1892 is gone. It will be relocated in another part of town. The one time Gross Hardware hammer sign on State Street which dates back to my youth has found a home somewhere in Ohio. And to remind us all of all these changes, The Republic has released Steps In Time, a second volume of their pictorial history of Columbus and Bartholomew County. I had a chance to briefly glance through it last week, and found a GLARING, no excuse error of the old State Street School (both buildings) being identified as Rock Creek Elementary!!!
I will never understand the justifications for tearing down something as historic as the old Central School other than for the reason that the school board just wanted a new building, period. I wonder what J. I. Miller would have had to say about that. I understand the need, but they could have at the very least kept the main building and worked from there.
And all those who have cried for more parking for our downtown area will finally get their wish: a three or four story parking garage. I have a feeling that this parking garage is going to turn in to a place to park for those who work downtown. Assigned parking spaces that will cost. I also wonder who and how many people will want to pay to park when it's finished next year? And the Commons as we know it. Wow...it should be entered into the Guinness Book Of World Records for the shortest time span a building has spent in one area (are you reading Guinness???). It opened up sometime around 1974, which would put it at approximately 33 years old. Heck, even the old McDonalds on National Road was older than that before it was replaced with a newer, more exciting, technologically up to date, McDonalds.
All of this makes me think about Columbus as being an architectural mecca of the midwest. Is a world famous architect involved in the planning for the "new Commons?" And how about the new parking garage? Any famous architects involved in that project?
Well, the answer to both is a flat out NOPE!
It seems to me that of all places, the New Commons should be a major architectural wonder to fit in with the theme of Columbus. But the chances of that happening is about the same as me being Mayor...
There have been many more changes to Columbus in 2007, and I must admit: this Columbus is no longer the Columbus of my youth. It hasn't been for quite some time now. And with all of its flaws, I miss the Columbus of my youth. On nostalgic nights when I can't sleep, I drive around the neighborhoods where I lived and visited, remembering the way things were...heck...they even re-numbered the houses on Parkway Drive where my grandmother lived. There is no longer a 1019 Parkway Drive. Center Street is nothing more than a commercial area and not many of the houses that were a part of my youth are around today. The same holds true for Mapleton Street.
Sometimes its difficult to accept change, but I guess that's a boat that all of us are in at times. Columbus will continue to grow and change. It will continue to drift further and further away from the Columbus of my youth. But that Columbus of my time will always be remembered. I was lucky enough to get one of the bicycle racks from Central. It sits behind our garage. It's no longer filled with bicycles, but wood for the fireplace. And there's always the Historic Columbus Indiana website. I can travel back in time any time I want through the pictures.
OOPS, I almost forgot to mention the whole reason for this post! The 2nd Annual Columbus Historic Celebration that was held back in April. Oh Boy--did the location ever spoil all of us Committee Members! The Commons was Thee Perfect Place to hold the event. The Celebration surpassed all of my wildest expectations and will be hard to top until the new Commons opens up in 2010. I still wonder at what the Committee Members put together for that special day. All contributed so much. Bob Records and wife drove all the way from South Carolina for the event. Bob Wolfe and wife came from Ft. Wayne (by the way, Bob has a new book out, which can be purchased at Art In The Heartland).
It was a day I will always treasure.
I hope that next year, 2008, will be as exciting as this past year, and I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I've added a new category to the Message Board. Under the category Life In Columbus Indiana Throughout The Decades, you will now find Columbus Indiana And World War II. Go to the main page and click on the link to read about this latest addition to the Message Board!

Hi everyone!
This isn't really a change to the Message Board, but it's the closest place to post it.
When I designed the Historic Columbus Indiana website, I tried to maximize wording and such so that a Google Search for Columbus Indiana would include the website somewhere. I've strived to keep it in the Top 10 for the last several years. I just did a search for Columbus Indiana, and the website, PLUS the Message Board, comes in a Number 3 and 4 respectively! Now that's something to be excited about!
Also, a search for Columbus Indiana History yields the website coming in at Number 1, plus Google further breaks down the search and lists High School Yearbooks, Postcards, Downtown Pictures, and more underneath the main heading.
Wow...I think we finally made it...
