I have a feeling someone may have grabbed that photo from the Historic Columbus Indiana website. Maybe not.
I think Bennie's was on 7th Street, and it later became Davis Grill (421 7th St., between Washington and Franklin).
There is still a restaurant at that location. Richard and I have been in there to eat, but it was several years ago.

Mother's Day A Special Card 81 Years AgoGod Bless all the mothers of the past, present and future. They are the enrichments of all our lives. They were and are the directional arrows of life that touched us all in the lows and highs of our beings in this great country. The below card was from my father to his mother during the year of 1930. He was a young 17 years old when he presented this framed in wood and glass to his mother. The wording reveals the the thoughts of many years ago, and of today. Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there reading this posting.

I see a postcard on eBay that shows the Polen Grocery 1914 located at 235 Jackson St. Columbus , In. . That location would be the Court House lawn it seems to me?. It is postmark Columbus, but could the card be Hope, In.?. The bids are getting fairly high.

Wow, George..........it is an old 1914 postcard, and I never heard of that one. Anyway for all to see until August 25, 2011 go to the ebay address below. There are about six views of the card. Go here: www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-1914-Columbus-Indiana-Postcard-Polen-Grocery-NR-/220836700635?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item336ae4a1dbOnce, the card is sold it will disappear within a short time. __________________________________________________________ History Information Researched:Harry E. Polen was a clerk in Howard Tooley's Grocery at 118 Brown Street before and after 1903 & 1904. Either his father or brother William P. Polen also worked as a clerk at the same grocery store. The postcard is dated 1914 so that means sometime between 1904 and 1914 Harry E. Polen started his own grocery store at 2nd and Jackson Street, near the Bartholomew County Courthouse as George said. Apparently, the name of his grocery was Harry E. Polen Grocer per the writing on the horse drawn wagon.
Public record says Harry E. Polen married Lutiahia Adams in 1904. William P. Polen was already married during that year to Eliza A. (unknown last name).
During 1904 both families lived at 1501 Union Street in Columbus, but both worked as said at Brown Street. The only other relative with the name Polen was Anna Polen.George, I think this research answers your question if the postcard was Hope or Columbus. It has to be Columbus per the information I posted herein.
Thanks George it was interesting researching the Polen Grocery and names. Sources: General information about the Polen family was found in the 1903-1904 Bartholomew County Directory.

Does anyone remember Ab Davis? I purchased his old farm house and everyone I talk to knows my house as the Davis farmhouse and seems to know of this man. I am trying to find any information on this house and old pictures is possible. It was built in 1860. I can not find any information any where. Going to go to the historical society in the next couple of weeks but any information anyone else has would greatly be appreciated.

Bob, what concerned me about the postcard was the address of the grocery, 235 Jackson St. would have been on the east side of Jackson St.. and that would have been the court house lawn?.

The 1914 Sanborn Insurance Map shows a grocery at 240 Jackson (sw corner of Jackson and 3rd Sts.). Wonder if that was it? It is a cool postcard. Will be fun to watch it and see what it ends up going for...maybe one of our own here will be the winner!

Hi Lismith,
I knew Ab Davis, it has been several years , but I was in the house before it was remodeled, I believe that there was 100 acres that went with the house. Also I believe Mr. Davis worked at Reeves on 7th St.
Mr. Davis had two daughters, one I did know , she is Louise Davis and lives at 407 S.Gladstone, phone 376-6989, she may be able to help you.
Hope ths helps..

The grocery at 240 Jackson was the Ab George grocery, I remember when it was still open. The Polen grocery is listed at 235 Jackson St., that address would be on the other side of Jackson St. .

George and All- Regarding Polen postcard--1907 Columbus directory lists H.E.Polen married to Latisia and was a clerk with no business or other address listed----then W. P. Polen married to Eliza snd was retired home address listed 1403 6th st.----Harry E. Polen lived in Columbus Twp. in East Columbus no occupation listed.----There is no Polen Groc. listed
1915-1916 directory ---there are no addresses with odd numbers listed on Jackson St. between 2nd and 3rd sts. There is no H.E. Polen or Harry Polen listed.
All of this information leads me to believe this might not be in Columbus Ind (although it is postmarked Columbus Ind) maybe Hope? There was (and is) a Jackson St and a 2nd St. there.

Jim,
I had the same thoughts about it being a Hope postcard that was mailed in Columbus, but the Sanborn maps of 1912 did not show a 235 Jackson St.
