Yes, it's frustrating to find a particular one when you want it. I have them mostly copied and saved in some categories to sort but to post one you have to find the Life archive link to that picture. Then sometimes an oddball one I've never seen before will pop up. I think those kids in those earlier First Christian kids photos might be the McGinnis children. Their were a number of pictures of him in the sanctuary. Appears To Be John S. McGinnis Family As one goes through the LIFE photos, and I have been through them many times in the past couple of weeks------it is 'interesting' to note that the photos seem to 'move around,' and sometimes very difficult to go back and find a photo that you 'know you have seen,' and one that sort of 'tells a part of the story.' It appears to me-----------that Francis Miller, the LIFE photographer, followed several families around, taking, in some cases, similar type photos. Like the Galbraith, McGinnis, and the Miller families. Just 'observing.' Nanc

First Christian Church Services January 1950 Comment: It appears the John S. McGinnis family are attending the service. Can others be identified? Interesting note: Many, many of the women wore hats to church, and NOT just on Easter, just on a 'regular Sunday.' Younger generations would not perhaps realize 'this is the way it was in the 50s.' Additional Information On 1950 Building Materials In Columbus Perma-Stone MaterialYesterday I said this: "There were mixtures of constructions such as bricks, wooden, limestone, cement texture like limestone, asbestos shingle siding; and prefabricated homes that have been mentioned in a previous post." Well, the cement texture like limestone was called Perma-stone (also Permastone). It was a imitation of Beford Limestone and mixed with cement and various colors would be added to the taste of the builder or buyer. This not so well known alternative siding material had a modest wave of popularity in post-war Indiana. It was a cementitious simulated stone product called Perma-Stone. Contractors applied this siding to the homes or businesses. The customers were looking for ease in updating their building or constructing a new home. Location of Variety of Materials Used: Go to Marr Road and 15th Street on the corner and you will see both Perma-Stone and Limestone homes. Driiving on 13th Street you will find a few "Prefabricated" homes from the 1950s. Note: The picture above is not a Time Inc. photo.

Walking Across 2nd Street Wooden Bridge Surface 1950Large Building: City Power HouseIn the very far right of the picture is 1st Street. There were businesses and homes along the street until you reached Lafayette Street connection. Historical Comment: The Haw Creek Leather Company started in the year 1914. It is listed in the Historic Properties and National & State Registers. However, I think it no longer is there. I believe it was torn down many years ago. Time Clock Punch Out For One WW II Veteran It SeemsThe unknown company time clock and card area. One gentleman has an "Ike" style jacket on with Army arm patch and another patch on front area of jacket. He may have been a WW II veteran that returned after the war and was working at this plant. The "Ike" jacket was named after Dwight D. Eisenhower a former 5 Star General of the Army and later our President, as we know. A Brief Historical View Of 5th & Lafayette Streets From 1893 To 1950This corner has a lot of history beyond the Irwin/Sweeney Home and Gardens. Oh, yes Clessie Cummins actually started his testing of his diesel engines in that home's garage to start the diesel kings inventions rolling. But, there are other interesting things about that corner of Columbus real estate. The old "book shaped" library was and good place to go and study, research projects and of course check out a book using the old card systems of the past. Directly, behind the library was an 1893 Tabernacle Christian Church. Below is an partial picture of the library and a distanced view of the old church that was torn down in 1942. Further, before the church was destroyed the new First Christian Church across from the old library was finished for service during 1942. As we know the old library is long gone, and was replaced with the present beautiful library. Below is a sequence of small pictures to bring the history of that corner alive, in your minds. Non Time Inc. Picture[img src=" img8.imageshack.us/img8/1820/columbus1893editedjw0.jpg"] Notice below, the church is shown. However, there was no library, and no Irwin Sweeney home yet. UPDATE: The lower right corner of the picture with a tower showing is the "First Fire House" in Columbus, built in 1871 per George. Non Time Inc. PictureNow, we turn to a partial view of the old library (keep in mind the old church was torn down 8 years earlier) and the new First Christian Church was complete. As we know this church was built in 1942 and still stands today. Only a small view of the old library on right is shown. Time Inc. Walking South Down Washington Street Toward 4th Street During The 1940s & 1950sGoing South as the camera is facingComment: The residents of Columbus dressed in the winter with lots of wool clothing such as pants, coats and shirts. It was common for men to wear hats and kids used ear muffs and hats. Many women wore pearls and silk stockings, hats or scarfs. Families poured into the stores of Washington Street on the weekends and shopped and attended the movie houses. Kids, would go roller skating over near Jackson Street. History Review Of "Wagon Bridge" Over White River Years 1879 to 1950From a toll bridge to a free bridgeColumbus, Indiana The old long gone 2nd Street bridge was referred too as the Wagon Bridge, in the late 1800s through an unknown date during local residents conversations. Pictures and post cards of early 1909 called it by that name. Local maps and drawings also called it the Wagon Bridge. But, to residents in the 1940s and 1950s it was commonly called the 2nd Street bridge. The partial Bartholomew County map below says "Wagon Bridge" in the lower left corner highlighted in a pinkish red color: Mt. Tipton home would be far left of end of bridgeThe actual date the wooden floored bridge was built was 1879. At that time it was a toll road. Then in 1884 it was modified with steel frames, but still retaining a wooden flooring. Anyway, the first picture that follows is the bridge during 1909 from a partial postcard. The bridge was used until 1951. When enlarged you can see the wagon track in the dirt road leading onto the bridge going East across White River. You will note the Water Works Plant in the picture. Dirt Road Leading Into BridgeThe next early 1900s picture shows the bridge coming out near the Water Works or Power House on 2nd Street area. Now, if you view the map above the drawing is not exact but in those days it was just a drawing and not exact, but you get the idea away. At the end of the bridge to the far left would have been the Tipton House built by Mr. J. G. Schwartzkopf . He was born 1859 and was deceased in 1909 about the time the second picture was printed. Then during January 1950 the Time/LIFE Inc. photographers arrived in Columbus to take pictures and this one is of the long gone 2nd Street bridge (or Wagon Bridge) of the past. Ti me Inc. Pictures: From David Sechrest's Historiical Columbus website and George's postcard collections also herein. The partial map was provided to me from Richard a couple years ago. Research and some of George's previous comments, provided the bridge toll history.

Vyron Galbraith at the Noblitt-Sparks (Arvin) parking lot between 13 and 14th Street . Richard just pointed out a tower on the building across the street which might have been the location of the Arvin Television lab. Also that the four smoke stacks were the location of the old packing plant.
