This photo from 1950 is of my Father. His name is John Robert Zeigler. Everyone called him Bob. We lived in East Columbus. Dad work at Cummins until 1984. He passed away in 2001. He worked in the shop until the Tech Center was built and then he worked in the pilot center there until retirement. Dad begin working at Cummins when I was about 1 yr old. He left for the war in '43 and returned in '45. My father and 4 of his brothers were all in the war at the same time. All of them returned home. He used to work in a department that was managed by John Walter.

Hi Roberta, I would bet that you rode to Columbus Senior High School in a 1950 Ford! I was sure the man in that picture was a Zeigler, but wasn’t sure which Zeigler! Ricky, the picture she must be talking about is the man moving the engine along the tram rail, page 10, post 90 in the Life Photos Thread. In 1950, when those pictures were taken, I think it’s a good possibility that he was moving an engine from the assembly line to the area between assembly and a test cell. Hi Roberta. Thanks for the input but I'm not sure which picture you are referring to. If you can describe the scene or use the "quote" feature we can link to that entry. Did you know have any idea that his picture was taken for a magazine so many years ago? This photo from 1950 is of my Father. His name is John Robert Zeigler. Everyone called him Bob. There are two pictures of Mr. John Robert Zeigler in the files if that is whom you are talking about. Here is the second picture of him: Picture URL Link Address (Time Inc Standard): images.google.com/hosted/life/l?q=columbus+indiana&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcolumbus%2Bindiana%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D21%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26start%3D525&imgurl=eeb84d8babe1fc27Hi Roberta, I would bet that you rode to Columbus Senior High School in a 1950 Ford! Precision Machinists Probably At Reeves or CumminsCan anyone identify the young man at the machine? It appears he may have been in WWII because of his arm tattoo. Many returning GIs had arm tattoos during the late 1940s and early 1950s. My Favorite Photo Of The Overall Time Inc. LIFE PostingsOver 200 Photos PostedThis scene from the former Mount Tipton Home with the gentleman, straw in mouth and the view down 3rd Street East past the courthouse is such a historical view. The former mound was claimed at one time to be an Indian Mound. However, after the house was destroyed and the mound removed for the future 3rd Street bridge; no traces of any Indian bones or relics were discovered. What was your favorite? There are plenty more Time Inc/LIFE photos to come but they are during 1961 and around 1967. The photographer is a different name and the pictures have a brief caption identification. The same rules of posting these copyrighted photos apply. If they are not posted by the Time Inc. standards; then they either must be changed or deleted. As you may be aware Time Inc. gave the Columbus Historical Message Board permission to post this history and comment about each at our choosing. Enjoy the next series of pictures that will be forthcoming over the next several days. Comment For Compliance: Because the posting procedures must be written (when using Time Inc./LIFE pictures) there are presently only 6 people with the knowledge and compliance requirements on how to post these pictures by Time Inc. standards and approval. If they are not posted properly they must be changed or deleted, until they comply with the procedures. Copyrights are involved and the procedures must be followed. This temporary comment will be deleted after the procedures are written and posted. Permission was granted March 16, 2009 to post selected pictures and our discussions relative to the pictures.
