A slightly different view of the Tasty Popcorn and Nut Shop. You can really see how it stands out from the building behind it. This is the triangular corner where years earlier the train used to cross coming from railroad square. Nancs remembers that before the nut shop building was built that this corner was used for performances or displays during street festivals. This is the reception area to J. Irwin millers office on the second floor of the "Irwin's Bank" building at 3rd and Washington. Since he was head of both Cummins and Irwin-Union bank and the other family business as well, he always had his office here. I love the ceiling in this space. Westermeier Hardware Store 1015 3rd Street (South side of 3rd St.)Columbus, Indiana Dates: 1940s & 1950s Comments: Westermeier store sold a vast amount of products. This included toys shown in the windows, old wringer type clothes washers, stoves, water heaters, kitchen appliances, tools, nuts/bolts, screws, toys and refrigerators. Going down 3rd Street to the left of the picture was the intersection, before crossing over Hawcreek bridge. Once, over the bridge on the right was Stadler Meat Packing Company. The street then was named State Street of East Columbus at that point. I Remember: Standing outside waiting on my father that had gone inside to buy some Christmas things. I was standing about where the two cars are parked looking at the toys inside. My father didn't want me to go inside because of whatever he was buying I guess had to be a secret. I may have been 6 years old then. Vyron Galbraith and his family: wife Elizabeth and daughters Nedra and Janet (the youngest one). They lived at 2003 Central and Vyron was a Toolmaker at Noblitt-sparks (Arvin). They were photographed all over town, working, shopping and at home. We have heard from daughter Janet who still lives in Columbus and she remembered the photoshoot and remembers her Dad being very proud of the pictures even though they were never published. They sure made a perfect 50's family. Check out that tiny 1950 TV, bet it was an Arvin brand! Good morning, and WELCOME to all the folks taking a look at the LIFE photos-----------------Enjoy, and do comment, please, and be a part of writing this '1950 page' of Columbus history. In reference to the 'popcorn stand,' there at about 5th and Washington, check out this post, 1940s thread, p. 19, reply 183, for a photo of that corner BEFORE the 'popcorn stand and the jewelry store. Interesting comparison. columbusin.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=columbusdecade&action=display&thread=68&page=19Nanc

Somewhere else in that section it was noted that in 1950 it was the John S. McGinnis Popcorn stand and in the 1953 it was listed as Orville Kelly popcorn. Elsewhere in these Life posts shows John McGinnis and his real estate company. It is really fun to read about the popcorn stand, as my husband and I was just talking about it the other day. We used to buy peanuts there when we went to the Rio and buy pop corn in the show and mix the peanuts in our popcorn. Also, was there a restaurant in the corner behind the stand?

Up to now, I have been the 'secretary' in this 'experience' and frankly haven't given a 'try' at posting LIFE photos according to the required LIFE guidelines. However and whereas, with that said-----I believe, that there are a number of photos of 'the John McGinnis family,' some attending church, dining as a family, and one, I believe, of Mr. McGinnis showing a home to, likely prospective buyers. MAYBE I CAN GET THE NAMES STARTED THE MAN AT THE EXTREME RIGHT I THINK IS RAY FROHMAN The Columbus Leadership That Brought Your Family Jobs & Your Great City "Leaping Forward""Our Quality of Life Was Affected By These Leader's Visions & Planning For The Most Part In 1950 Forward"The picture below seems to show the City Mayor Robert L. Stevenson conducting a Columbus business civic and planning meeting with the top CEOs, during January 1950. Mr. Stevenson is facing the board with his back to the picture. At the direct end of the table is J. Irwin Miller. On Mr. Millers right in picture is Carl Reeves and Left is Glenn Thompson. UPDATE of Names: The man next to Carl Reeves is possibly Q.G. Noblitt (a founder/ CEO) of Arvins; and the man next to him could be Loren K. Evans a former President of Arvins. The information was provided by George a board member. We are in the process of identifying all the board members and will update this post as we get confirmation from you folks and other members on the broads. If you know a person in the picture please post a comment. Thank you.
