Richard, I remember shopping at Louden's when I lived here in 1967; Don was in Viet Nam and I worked at the Air Base. I would run into Louden's on my way home and get groceries. I sure don't remember items being quite so inexpensive but I guess they were. If I didn't shop there, I shopped at Marsh's out on State Street (which is now Lo-Bills).

Hi, Richard, and I really don't think that many of us missed the Ed Sullivan shows, regardless of where you lived. As well as, I think the Lawrence Welk show. Know that back about 1957, my family and I did go to the televising of the Lawrence Welk show out here. This, as I recall, was a live taping of his show. As you may recall during the broadcast members of the audience were invited to dance in front of the cameras. My folks did, indeed, dance on the show. It was absolutely amazing the number of Columbus folks that called to say that they had seen them on TV. I danced, too, with the current date, but got no recognition!!!!! Thanks for posting this TV stuff, and jarring this aging brain. Nanc

Do you recall hearing the term ‘Clear Channel Radio’? My thinking is that a ‘Clear Channel Station’ was one of a few AM stations that were allowed to broadcast with 50,000 Watts of Power. The implied meaning of that term was that those stations could be heard ‘coast to coast and border to border’, and that’s what some of the DJ’s stated while giving the stations Call Signs! This advertisement appeared November 25, 2006. WLW is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. I was surprised that out of town radio was advertising in the local paper in the later part of 1963. On second though, I bet Ruth Lyons, Fifty-Fifty Club, was still being broadcast at that time. For more on the life of Ruth Lyons go to this link: www.channelcincinnati.com/slideshow/station/5048290/detail.html

Perry Mason, The Ed Sullivan Show and Dinah Shore! Wow what great memories. I loved them all...but I especially loved Dinah. She always signed off with "See the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet" and threw a big "kiss" to her audience. :-) Remember?

Oh sure,I do recall the clear channel radio stations. The FCC allowed these stations to be the only broadcasters on these frequencies at night.I had a plastic transistor radio that my folks bought at Gamble's and gave me as a Christmas present.I wore that radio out.I listened to WLAC in Nashville Tenessee, which played Rhythm and Blues, which didnt get much play in Columbus. And I got to listen to WBZ from Boston, probably one of the best Top 40 stations back in the mid-sixties.There was not really any coast to coast signal,50 Kilowatts could not make that trip. However some nights I could recieve a station from Mexico (Callsign started with an X) where there were no limitations on transmitter power.Thats where the renowned Wolfman Jack began his career. Of course I also listened to WLS and WCFL out of Chicago, they were indeed the "Sound of the Midwest".And my folks had CSI tuned in in the daytime for the local stuff.I also listened to WAKY out of Louisville and WIBC and WIFE out of Naptown.Cant remember ever listening to any Cincinnatti stations.

Radio is my one good memory of an otherwise rather dismal childhood. WSM and WLAC in Nashville, WLS and WCFL in Chicago and always my favorite WOWO in Fort Wayne. On any night you could expect to tune in mysterious signals which did that weird skip in the atmosphere and managed to extend way past their expected range. All those faraway voices and exotic music fed my hopes and dreams and still makes me smile when I remember hiding out in my room next to the open window trying to feel a breeze and pull in those radio waves.
