I've posted this picture before, but thought I'd add it here as well. Downtown Washington Street, looking northeast from 6th Street. The old Kroger grocery store is on the northeast corner.

This gas station was located on the northwest corner of 5th and Jackson. The old Carpenter's Drug building can be seen in the background.

Hello to all!
Concerning this folder: There are 22 pictures posted here, and I apologize for NOT being more organized and posting them in order. Forgive me...
I can see that your posts regarding the pictures could become somewhat confusing, so what I plan on doing is copying any responses and then pasting that response with the picture. That way (hopefully), things will read much easier.
I've already copied RER's response to the first picture with the picture.
While all of the pictures are interesting, it would be great to figure out where that two-story stone house was.
It appears that two separate buildings were demolished within this picture collection. One being the building where Irwin Union is. But I don't think ALL the demolition pictures are from that same location. I hope we can determine where and what the other location was.

If I remember correctly, Vorwald's was on the northeast corner of 3rd and Jackson. If so, this would picture a partial look at Vorwald's, then looking at the grounds of the Courthouse in the background. Everyone agree on that?

David, What a great bunch of pictures. I believe that picture 1 is at 2nd. and Jackson on the N.W. corner, you can see the roof of the old Schwartzopf Opera House north about three locations. The court house is across the street. Pictures 2 , 4 and 6 are Everroads garage that later moved to 5th and Jackson. Picture 3 is at the conner of 5th. and Jackson on the S.W. corner. Pictures 9 and 16 are the Salem Speedway. I don't remember picture 5, it may not be a Columbus picture??.

George, thanks for the input.
I'm with you: the more I study Picture #5, I don't think it is of Columbus.

David, The 3 demolition pictures, 18,19,and 22 may be the old Christian Tabernacle that was located on Lafayette Ave between 5th and 6th street. It was replaced by the new Christian Church on 5th. street, it was torn down around 1944 ,I do remember seeing it and after it was taken down a small city park was built on that quarter block. Yes picture 20 is the old 25th street fairgrounds.

George, that might be. The building, or what remains of it, definitely looks like a church, doesn't it?
Within this collection were some pictures that weren't of Columbus. As George stated earlier, one of the 1/4 midget cars was taken at the Salem track.
There is also a picture taken while crossing the old Ohio River bridge going into Louisville.
I would bet that the picture of that grand two-story home wasn't in Columbus after all, but I could be mistaken here. I'm just not familiar with Francis Cory. One would think with a home like that, that his name would be remembered.

Thanks to all who have sent me emails regarding this picture collection. Thanks to one in particular who helped to identify several of the photos.
I'm in the process of putting the comments with the pictures. Hopefully, that will make it easier for you to see and read.

This picture has nothing to do with Columbus, but just for kicks, I thought I'd add it here. It appears that this picture was taken while crossing the Ohio River bridge going into Louisville from Indiana (of course, it could be the other way around). Then again, I could be totally wrong here with the location. Anyway, a nice picture...

David, Check page 35 in the Bartholomew county Columbus,Indiana sesquicentennial book 1821- 1971. It shows the inside of the Tabernacle Christian Church on Mechanic street now Lafayette Ave. In the pictures of the building demolition the part that remains standing looks alot like the inside picture of the church in the book???.

As I examined the picture , I wondered about the lane markings? If the car in the very front of the picture keeps in his lane, he will run into the car coming from the other direction! I always thought it was a two lane bridge, but now I'm not so sure ...Anyone Margo

David, thanks for a great job on the pictures, I know it was a lot of work. I do have a couple more things regarding the pictures, I don't recall ever seeing the large home, must be another location. The race cars in the Salem pictures would have been at that time, looks like the late 1940"s, AAA sprint cars, some race fans referred to them as Big Cars. In the early 1950"s the Salem 1/2 mile track had the record for fast time for a 1/2 mile track.

George, I heard from Karyn Konetzka, and she passed this info on to me:
"I can tell you that my Uncle Junior ( Lawrence McDonald Jr.), who is an Atomic War Veteran, took most of the pictures when he and my mother moved to Columbus, which would've been in the late 30's or 40's and then into the 50's, so your timeline guess is correct I believe. He rode his bike around Columbus and took pictures, then he had an interest in racing cars (I'll ask where the track was), and then has a friend that flew so he took some aerial photos. They moved to Columbus from Shelbyville, so maybe the mansion is located in Shelbyville, but I will check with my Uncle and see if he remembers. The demolition pictures I'll have to ask him about also, it seems he said something about a big controversy and a church, so I don't really know."
Karyn is going to see if she can find out more info.

I'm not really sure where to leave this post, but since it is regarding pictures, why not here in this folder?
I picked up my copy of Columbus: 125 Years tonight. I hope most of you know the book I speak about here.
While glancing through some of the pictures, it seems to me that the captions are wrong for the time periods. For example, the picture on the cover is also included inside the book. It states the picture comes from the 1940's, when 1950's cars are definitely caught along that stretch of Frankin Street.
The picture of the horse drawn trolly being pulled up Washington was taken looking south of the old St. Denis Hotel. The picture states it was taken in 1893. While I cannot prove it wasn't, it does appear it was taken before this time.
There are also a couple of "aerial" shots (that is, taken from the tops of buildings). It seems to me that the streets are not correctly identified.
Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me?

A better shot of the gas station in an earlier picture. This must be the west side of Jackson Street, somewhere around the corner of 5th and Jackson. You folks agree? I believe this picture was taken from the Powell Chevrolet parking lot looking east from 2nd and Jackson Streets. Note the court house, the clock tower is on the left or north side of the picture, so we are looking east from the south west.
