This is a recent (February 2005) photo of the organ in Zaharako's. I took it last year when our local antique club met there.

I have to tell you all what I use now instead of a hot water bottle/heating pad. I have made a fabric "bag" from flannel or terry cloth. Inside, I put long grain rice.......about 2 pounds. I also added some lavender blossoms. Sew it tightly shut. Heat it in the microwave for about 3 minutes. It creates a moist heat which is excellent for sore muscles, joint pain, and migraines. It is flexible.....and if you make a long "tube" instead of a bag, (by using a sock!) it can lay around a sore neck! The lavender just releases a nice scent. Supposed to be good for headaches. I have a long history of suffering from migraines. My "rice bag" heating pad has been a real life saver.

Well.........IT's a hot water bottle. Wikipedia says it was originally patented by a Croatian inventor named Eduard Penkala. Replaced today with an electric heating pad.

This photo is sometime in the 1940's shortly before the house was torn down to make way for the grocery. Notice that the tower had been removed at some point.

Same house...about 1900. Now it has a full porch around the front. The tower is still on the house.

Same home a few years later after a porch was added on the right side of the photo.

This is the oldest photo I have of my great great grandfather's home...the Captain Wm. Lucas home which used to stand in the 900 block of Washington Street. Capt. Lucas is seated on the right and has the family dog at his feet. Mrs. Lucas is standing on the porch. My great-grandmother-to-be, Mary Crump Lucas, is standing in the front yard. Her brother is also there with his bicycle. This photo was taken about 1875.

As a tour guide for the city of Columbus, we have been told that the reflecting pool of First Christian Church had to be abandoned because of maintenance issues, vandals ( people throwing trash, etc.), and insurance/security issues.
My parents were married at the church in 1952. The pool was still there at that time.

Rode our bikes out National Road today onto the new bridge so I could take photos of the old green bridge before it is demolished. I'll edit photos and try to get them posted here soon.

A copy of "I Discover Columbus" just sold on eBay a couple weeks ago for about $38.00. I got MY copy through an out-of-print book service for $15.00. =)
There was also a book written about the Donnor family. I'll find out the title and post it here.
The Balthazar Korab book is available at the Columbus Visitor's Center, as well as lots of other books about Columbus.

I would suggest contacting the local library and also the local historical society. The Indiana Room of the Bartholomew County Public Library has a vast number of resources. You might also check their on-line catalog to see if they have the volume you are looking for.
The local historical society also houses a library of its own.

Thanks for posting the great photo of my great, great, great, great grandparents' grave site. I visited it with Charlie a couple of years ago. It was really getting overgrown then. It's in the back yard of a house on Laurel Drive. The little cemetery is on land that used to be part of the Crump family farm land.

Many more historical markers could be placed in Columbus. All you need to do is research, document, and present the required paperwork to the Indiana Historical Bureau. The markers can be about people, companies, historical buildings, etc.. How about Chuck Taylor, Clessie Cummins, Mr. Donner...........
If anyone wants to tackle it, let me know. I can point you in the right direction!

It is my understanding that Sylvia HAS now written a second book about Death Valley. I do not know the name of it, but guess that it would be available at Viewpoint Books in the Commoms Mall, or at the Heartland shop right near the former Cummins Bookstore.

This is a Sears home that is currently for sale. It is located at 2026 Lafayette Avenue. The reason I know it's a Sears home is because it was on our Columbus Herb Society garden tour about 3 years ago and the owners told us about the Sears connection.

The other views of the house are listed under grocery stores. I mistakenly have them listed under the A & P grocery. It was the Standard grocery that went up after demolition of the Lucas mansion.

George,
That's my great great grandfather's house. All the views of that house that I have are posted somewhere else on this site. The house changed dramatically from the late 1800's to 1947-50. Capt. Lucas was the president of First National Bank for a time, and his wife became president after his death.
I'll see if I can locate the other photos. They all need to be together on the board.

Dave.........and everyone else,
Some of these things you all are writing about need to be expressed as letters to the editor of the local paper. More people would see, and know, the concern about things such as the school eventually being torn down. This is a great forum, but you need to reach a larger audience by simply sending copies to The Republic!
