Is there a place on the message board specifically for information about churches in Columbus? I can't find it! There was discussion a few weeks back about the bell tower of First Christian. I have gotten new info........but can't find any place to put it!

Yes, George. It is Jane & Dennis Edwards. I have e-mailed her copy of the post card photos and she is very excited to get them. I have invited her to visit the web site and come aboard as a member. She has lots of history on the house.

George,
I know the husband & wife who currently live in that wonderful house NEXT to the Catholic church in Edinburg(h)! It's still a great old house!

Here's some REAL money from First National Bank. My great-great grandfather, Captain William Jones Lucas, was president of the bank from the late 1800's to 1901. Upon his death in 1901, his wife, Elizabeth Crump Lucas, became president. It is believed that she was the first woman to be president of a bank......in Indiana, and possibly in the United States. If you look closely at this bill, you will see it contains her signature in the lower right corner. It was common for banks at that time to have their own currency.

Eero did not design First Christian Church. His father, Eliel Saarinen designed it.

I was told the bells were removed to save the tower. If you look closely at the tower, you can see where it has had to have repair. The ONLY thing in the tower now is a ladder (yes...ladder!) that goes all the way to the top. All weight was removed from the tower to save it. Columbus sits on a giant aquifer. More water passes under Columbus every day than flows past St. Louis by way of the Mississippi river daily. Bob Stewart, former mayor, gave a talk to tour guides, and relayed this information. The tower was in danger of collapse because of our spongy ground.

Margo,
The main entrance to the new middle school faces west. It will not have any streets running past it. Perhaps this is for security reasons? I would guess that another reason might be ease of getting kids in and out of the building without disrupting traffic on the streets?

Apparently I got there earlier this morning than Richard did. I also returned this evening. The old school isn't giving up without a fight. They seemed to have trouble breaking through the rubber roofing this morning. How lonely she looks this evening.

Good goin', Babs! I knew if enough of us ding-donged enough of the right people, we'd be able to get it saved!

This corner stone is inside Central Middle School/the old high school. It is in the commons area. Is there ANY way we can find out if it is going to be saved?? Time is running out! This should not be destroyed! Please help!

Nancy,
No. The old high school is not in the midst of demolition. It is slated for use as a school one more year while they finish up building the replacement.....which I think looks horrid!

This is a photo of the solid copper guttering on the south side of the building. It is beautiful.......and is all around the building. Will they just bulldoze it into a pile soon??
