I, too, went recently to the old high school building and took many photos. On June 28th, in the morning, I walked completely around the buildings and took photos of as many of the wonderful architectural details as I could.......knowing that the building will soon be gone. I'll work on posting some today for all to view.

Sad news. I was by Central School today and they have torn off the pillar/railing above the main entry way. Guess they made good use of spring break to tear it off while no kids were around. I'm sure they determined that it was "unsafe". If you haven't gotten your snapshots of the ol' school, it's almost too late!

Someone asked for photos to be posted. I don't know which "Subject" it was under, so I've started a new one. This is a photo I took about 2 years ago. Since then, the concrete railing, just above the two entry pillars, has begun to collapse and has fallen backwards onto the entry roof.

Making me more sad when I see that the white covering has been ripped off the semi-circular seating upstairs. There was nothing wrong with that seating a couple years ago.

Bob, The "Crump" terrazzo "floor" is actually outside the theater under the ticket booth. You would stand on it if you were buying tickets. I'm sure it's still there. If that deco-style light is gone, I will be very sad, though it wouldn't surprise me. The punk/hard rock groups that play in the theater today are hard on the place...in my opinion. The silhouettes I took home and cleaned are supposed to be locked up in a closet upstairs. I only had two of them...out of the 6 that were originally in there. The other 4 got very damaged by the kids jumping through them. I literally cried the day I took the two best ones back to the theater. I feel they will never be replaced in any kind of good condition.

I hope this works.......... I thought I had posted my photos of the Crump interior, but I guess not. These are photos I took in October of 2002 when we first began cleanup of the theater. I can't believe it's been that long. We had it cleaned up very well for a premier showing of a documentary fundraiser. Check out how nice the lobby looked. Let's start outside the front door. Enter in through the doors... ...into the lobby Looking at the stage from the balcony. Notice those 3 black rectangles. Here is what was IN those rectangles. They looked like nothing but BLACK silhouettes....but wait! I took some of them down, brought them home, and cleaned them! This one has blue plastic behind it so you can see detail. Wish we could find out who painted them! Up to the second floor. This is the wonderful art deco light in the ceiling. Rovene and I carefully took it down, cleaned it, and put it back up. On to the stage. These wonderful old poster cut-outs are glued to the upper walls back on the stage. They appear to be old time actors who perhaps preformed vaudeville at the Crump?? Too bad they will soon be falling on the floor...if they haven't already. Finally, here is shot of the wonderful marquee. It is a sight to behold when it is turned on at night.

It was another great day for a marker dedication ceremony last Saturday! Here are just a couple photos. If you haven't driven past the marker yet, it is at the intersection of Middle Road and Grissom. The marker is in front of the chapel, which is the ONLY remaining former barracks building left on the grounds.

Don't forget....
This Saturday, May 19th, at 11:00 a.m. is the dedication of the historical marker for Atterbury/Bakalar.
The post is already in the ground. The marker will be at the corner of Middle Road and Grissom........near the front door of the chapel.

The piano recital scan tickles me. My mother is Mary Kathryn Lincoln, and she played "Tiny Fingers"...which would have been appropriate, since she was only a little over 4 years old when that recital was held! Her sister (my aunt) was Dorothy Marilyn Lincoln, who also played at this recital. ...and Charlie played piano?

Did you mean "American Hominy Company".....not Homey Company? I wonder how many kids today even know what hominy is! I like it. I need to see if I can find some at the store!

Here's another Whitmer's product bottle currently on eBay. Apparently, they made machine oils, too!

From what I've been told, H.C. Whitmer Co. used to be about where Lincoln School is now on 5th Street. They made liniments and salves.......among other things. I recently brought a can of salve back from my furniture run to Florida, to be donated to the local historical society. (Ed Shumway owned the furniture I bought and had the tin of salve.) The salve, and the liniment, both had labels stating that it could be used for burns, cuts, (etc.), and was "good for man or beast." That is the extent of my knowledge of the H.C. Whitmer Company.

Bob,
Can you tell me anything else about the Crump-Lucas building on Washington Street? Both those names are in my family tree. I'm sure it has some connection, and have run across the building's name somewhere in my family history research, but don't know how/why it is named that.

As an interesting side note: Orinoco Furniture Company made cabinets for Capehart in their last few years in business. They made radio cabinets...to my knowledge.

I have a photo of kids playing basketball upstairs in the former Boys Club which was located at the corner of 5th and Franklin. Today, that is the Barbara Stewart Room of the Columbus Area Visitor's Center. When I have time, I'll post the photo!

I just talked to Bennie Stott about Bob-O-Link. He's in the same antique club that I am in. He worked there, as a young man, shortly after it opened. Here's what he recalls: Bob Barline (and I don't know if that's spelled correctly) owned the land prior to going into the Navy. When he returned from the Navy after WWII, he opened the Bob-O-Link. This was prior to St. Rd. 31 being built through the city. Bennie thinks it was about 1948. Bennie worked there until he, himself, went into the Navy. If any of you are familiar with Bennie Stott, he has a long-time restaurant connection to Columbus. Even now, he cooks and bakes for Sadie's Restaurant almost every day.......and he's supposed to be retired!!
