Was just by the Fish place yesterday. They have a new sign out front on the building! I think is says "Ye Old Fish Shop" or "Fish House" ..........something like that. It's all in blue and white and has a cutle little "Nemo" type fish on the sign.

Ricky, I realize the tour bus goes right by but I've never taken time to eat there. Also........I try to avoid deep fried. I have a tenderloin sandwich about once every........two years?? I will say the tenderloins at Gnaw Bone Food & Fuel are great!

My husband just had lunch at "Shorty's" yesterday for the first time since we moved here 5 1/2 years ago. He said they have good tenderloin sandwiches....better than Columbus Bar. From everything I've ever heard or read, Indiana is the "home" of breaded tenderloin sandwiches. There was even an article on "Across Indiana" just this past weekend about it.

I don't know where to post this, but the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives will host its 2nd Annual Meeting on Friday, February 2nd, at 4:00 in the Red Room of our local library. We invite anyone who is interested in preserving the great architectural history of Columbus to join us for this meeting. Tony Costello, a retired professor of architecture from Ball State, will be our featured speaker. He has a great passion for Columbus, and will be unveiling some exciting coming events. After the meeting, we invite one and all to visit the Archives to see how far we have come in the past two years.

Wow! The stairway in that old post office building is lovely!
Thanks, Ricky, for correcting folks about the current downtown "redevelopment" going on. I'm with you. I think some of the people in this town have gone mad! Tearing down buildings that are barely 35 years old? What a waste of money!

Great article about "Little George" and "Big George" today! Since I wrote the original question to Paul Minnis a couple weeks ago, I'd like to think I helped spur the idea for that column. =)
Big George....Looks like I'll have to plan flowers for a new location next year!

From the "bet you didn't know".........
After just seeing the post card of the old Carnegie library, I have to put this tid bit out there for all of you..........Did you know that the old library was architecturally designed so that the building looked like/represented a standing, open book?! Notice the entrance portion of the building. That is the "spine" of the book. Now look at the post card at both sides of the building. The left portion, which would have run along 5th Street, is the "back cover" of the open book. The right side is the "front cover" of the open book. These, and many other old architectural plans, are part of the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives!

I would like to suggest to all of you to call the Visitor's Center and sign up for tour guide training which will start at the beginning of the year. 13 weeks of classes will give you all the correct information about your city! Even if you have lived here all your life, I'll bet that you will learn much about your home town. Once you have completed the training, you can then help us share with all the thousands of visitors who come to Columbus every year. I would like to also invite you to visit the new web site of the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives (CIAA) at www.columbusarchives.org. The Archives is located in the basement of the library. We are currently cataloging all the architectural drawings, plans, letters, photos, etc., that have been collected through the years. We are also in the process of contacting the architectural firms, and locals, to collect all the plans, photos, etc., of our noted architecture, for future generations to be able to study. If you have any questions, please contact me. Rhonda

A correction!!
The sculpture that looks like two red "c's" is NOT by Cesar Pelli. It is by Bernar Venet, and is called "Two Arcs de 212.5 degrees" and was done in 1987.
Cesar Pelli was the principal architect of the Commons and Commons Mall done in 1973.
My tour guide training was good for something! =)

Today at the Columbus Airport! I don't know if there is such a thing as "Air Force 3", but the jet Mrs. Bush came in on was much smaller than Mr. Cheney's was last week!

Ditto to everything Ricky just said! I think Ricky and I came to Columbus at about the same time. Those of you who have lived here all your lives really do need to sometimes be reminded what a great city this is!! I am from the tour guide class of 2002. I took the class to learn more about my new "home town", and to meet people, since I only knew TWO people in this town when my husband and I moved here! Little did I know that I would also get the chance to meet and talk with so many interesting folks who VISIT Columbus! If you would like that same opportunity, and can volunteer a few hours a month, call the Visitor's Center and tell them you'd like to sign up to take the tour guide training. It will start at the beginning of 2007 and usually has about 13 weeks of sessions. I guarantee you will learn lots about your home town!!

Dana,
E-mail me at my home address. You can link to it from my Orinoco web site. I can give you more information that way.

Can't find an appropriate place to post this on the site. I just found this info on the Indiana Historical Bureau website as I was reading all the documentation listed on-line about "my" Orinoco marker.
There will be another historical marker dedication in Columbus soon!
Historical Marker Announcements for May 2007: Atterbury Army Air Field marker will be dedicated in Bartholomew County on May 19, 2007.
We need a topic just for Atterbury...don't you think? Of course, some of these "topics" get "off topic" sometimes...making it harder to locate info.

An education, indeed! During the dedication, Mayor Fred Armstrong was there. He saw what terrible condition the sidewalk was in, called his own voice mail, and left himself a message to get a crew out to the sight to put in NEW SIDEWALK, and possibly even a curb!! A "positive" that has come about because of the historical marker.

My goal has finally been achieved! The marker is in place and the dedication was held Saturday, April 28th. If you are out and about, stop by and take a look! This is a photo of all the descendants of William Harvey Lincoln who were present at the dedication. On the left is my brother, Greg; my son, Aaron, and me. From the right is my cousin, Julie McCawley; her son, Chris (in the back) and his 4 children...who would be great, great, great grandchildren of Wm. H. Lincoln.

For all of you who haven't heard.........
"My" historical marker was delivered Thursday! It has been picked up by the city traffic department and put into storage at the city garage for safe keeping. They are going to try to have it installed on the Orinoco site by Thursday, April 19th, which is my birthday.
Official dedication is planned for Saturday, April 28th, at 11:00 a.m.
Y'all come!

On Thursday, I delivered the required breakaway device to the City Engineer's office. This will need to be installed prior to the post being set in place. The city engineer's office has agreed to install the entire thing for me....since it's on city right-of-way! We are getting SO close now to having this historical marker dedication!
