Demolition of the neighborhood near the Central Middle School for a parking lot has begun. I understand that the lot will be in the north half of the block between Chestnut, California, Sixth and Seventh Streets. This view is looking toward the southeast corner of Seventh and Chestnut Streets.

Hi folks, I have been thinking of how eager I always looked forward to the "Triangle ' student newspaper each week. There were always articles about your best friend or girl, what the sports teams were up to. I remember it as a wonderful work of information. The talent of editors, writers and printers all had to come together at the right time. What I was thinking is this. Do you suspose hidden back in some dark, dusky closet one might find the whole collection of them? What a treasure of info that could provide. Perhaps someone knows of one or more of those great kids and could come up with some to enter in the high school pages? Just a thought.

Program For Graduating Class of 1935 Columbus High School (CHS) 73 Years Ago This 2008Contributed by Jack Hinkle. There are many names of the past that I recognize somewhat. Jack indicated that his mother is shown as Roberta Maxine Elliott. He further recognized Orris Manley of the past.

I MENTIONED THIS ELSEWHERE BUT THOUGHT I WOULD PUT IT HERE TOO THE WASHINGTON BLDG WAS THE BOOKSTORE MY MOTHER WAS THE MANAGER FROM 1947 TILL 1951 WHEN VIRGINIA KENT TOOK OVER. THERES A PICTURE IN THE 1951 LOG THAT A SHOT OF ROBERTA HINKLE EVEN A LITTLE WRITEUP ABOUT HER LEAVING. YOU CAN PROBABLY TELL IM PROUD OF MOM SHE WORKED FOREVER FROM THERE SHE WENT TO HAMILTONS ON COTTAGE AVE THEN TO SIMMEN-PENNISTEN HARDWARE AND THEN TO VERNCO(EMERSON ELECTRIC) TALK ABOUT HISTORY. SHE ALSO WORKED AT A CREDIT UNION AFTER SHE RETIRED SHE WORKED AT MCDONALDS AND VOLUNTEERED AT THE HOSPITAL Does anyone know the official name of the Columbus High School building that sat across the alley from the old Olympia Dairy ? It housed all the vocal and instrumental music departments during the 50's. As I was in two Choirs( downstairs) and band ( upstairs) .. I spent almost half of my high school years there. For those who remember Acapella Choir.. Mr. ( Joe ) Williams was the favorite director ! He was sooooo talented ! He could direct with just his pinkie finger many times and we could follow his every move !! I learned much under his tutelage. He also directed our First Baptist Church choir so I saw him every day of the week except Saturday. I learned later that Jerry Robinson who was in our Class of 1955 returned for a while to direct the Vocal department also. GREAT GREAT memories !! Mr McIndefer was our band dirtector at first and then Mr. Templeton. I was really not impressed with either director. I'm guessing it was because I was not that talented on the clarinet. However... it helped to get me in free to all the football and basket ball games !! Otherwise I probably could not have attended many. Those were the days with great band members and HOT BLACK WOOL UNIFORMS! ( great for football games but a torture chamber during the summer months !! Jim Dickey..Max Salkeld.. Tom Mueller ..Diane Meneely..Richard Land.. Shirley Gugle.. Allen Dillman..Jon Guckenberger.. Gene Amick...Nancy Barkes..Shirley Berenbrock and of course..Judy Eckles my dear and closest friend for over 50 years !!

The Only Building Still Standing Of Old Columbus High School FootprintsLocated Today At 722 Pearl StreetJack has referenced below that his mother was the bookstore Manager in this building for 1947 to 1951. Addtional information about the building can be found in the post sited below in small blue print within this site. Charles F. Sparrell was the architect for the school which cost $9,200. The building picture here is the former school. Over the years it housed the Columbus High School, Boys Club, CHS Book Store, and CHS musical bands. The beloved sclulpture that many people call "Pan", actually entitled "BirdBoy" by sculptor Myra Reynolds Richards has finally been installed in a special place inside the new Central Middle School (it is on the second level near the entrance to the "Grey Box" theatre space. It has only been in place for a week or so.

A Close Up View of Old Central High School (CHS) Peter Pan Statue History preserved in the new Central Middle School per Ricky Berkey this year 2008 Source of picture & Comment: From the 1931 Log. The statue was mounted at an unknown date but was shown in the 1920s Logs also. It is assumed that the statue may have been placed originally in the 1920s. Pictures of the high school entrance in 1917 did not show the statue. It was shown in some of the Logs as I said in the 1920s. In 1925 it was shown on the outside cover of the Log.

I DECIDED TO ADD THIS LITTLE TIDBIT TO OUR HISTORY LESSON TODAY I ATTENDED THE CENTRAL SCHOOL THE FIRST YEAR DURING THAT YEAR I UNDERTOOK A RESEARCH PROJECT ABOUT THE VARIOUS JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS THRU OUT THE MIDWEST. DURING THAT YEAR COLUMBUS HAD 626 STDENTS ENROLLED. MEMORY SERVES THAT THERE WAS A SCHOOL IN CHICAGO WITH 4,000 AND SECOND PLACE WENT TO ARSENAL TECHNICAL OF INDIANAPOLIS SOMETIMES KNOWN AS TECH. TECH HAD 3100.
I THINK THERE WAS A GRADUATING CLASS IN 1960 OF 432.
I'LL LET YOU ALL FIGURE THE APPROPRIATE GRADUATION PERCENTAGES BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY OF THEM QUIT OR MOVED OR WHAT.

For at least the past twelve years the Easter Seal Society of Bartholomew County has sold a 24K gold plate on brass collectible Ornament near Christmas. In 2000, the building was The Central School. The Easter Seal Society has a few of the 2000 Ornament available for sale. The cost is $18.00 at the office and $20.00 if shipping is required. The Easter Seal Society of Bartholomew County will order more if enough interest is shown. I was in the 8th grade in 79 when the school burnt. I was at lunch standing at my locker when the fire alarm went off. We never had a fire drill at lunch so I just thought someone had just pulled the alarm and I didn't worry about it. All of a sudden Mr. Lortz our principal came running down the stairs and told us to get out, it was a real fire. I just slammed my locker shut with my coat still in it and took off for the door. Once outside I could already see the flames shooting from the roof. There were a few students cheering but most of us were standing there in shock and many of them including myself were crying. I remember it was so cold and we couldn't stand outside for long. They took most of the students to North High School where they caught busses to go home. My mother always picked me up from school because she worked downtown so I stayed behind because I did not have a bus to go home on. When she found me I was with the Mayor and the School Superintendent in the gym. I don't remember exactly how long we were out of school but I remember we had to finish the rest of the year by going half days. The 7th and 8th grade went in the morning and the 9th grade went in the afternoon. The following year we had to walk to St. Bartholomew's school for some of our classes.

I went to 8th grade there in 1969-1970. I forgot about those icy steps. It was almost exactly 1/4 mile around that block. I remember the first day of track in the spring. All we did was run around and around in the rain. I remember someone complaining. So the coach said we could run in the gym. Sounded good. In the gym, you ran around part of it, then up a set of steps and then down a set, then around again. I think laps in the Spring rain were preferable to stair lap.

I am a 50 year old man who went to centrial jr. high from 70 to 74 i am dumfounded i did not know this had all happend no one told me i am almost in tears. I remember in the years i went there the rebuilt the school then making it more modern with a common area you could watch movies on your lunch break they had all the lockers put in one place and they built a state of the art A/V room you could go to and watch tv or science class movies etc... i am very sad i am going this weekend and at least look at the old grounds. i can say about centrial that in the 70s it was a cool place to be i never love and hated a place so much i would do it all again in a heart beat.
